Welcome to Palm City

We open with a look back ten years ago to get an introduction to Formula X Racing, and its most legendary star Rex Racer. We get to see the joy for Rex through the eyes of his little brother Speed, who wants to be just like his brother. Fast forward ten years and Speed is the most popular racer in Formula X Street Racing. As he races through the streets of Palm City, while his brother Spritle with his pet monkey Chim-Chim broadcast the races on ViewTube. Speed Racer of course comes out the winner after thinking about what his brother would’ve done.

The high of winning is short lived as Speed and Spritle get caught sneaking the Mach 5 back into the shop by Pops. Speed defends himself by arguing Pops should let him race in the Formula X League. But Pops is against this as he still hasn’t come to terms with Rex dying in a race. As Speed goes off to blow off some steam, Pops feels bad.

While Speed is out, he ends up meeting a girl at the Victory Lane Diner, her name is Trixie, and she shares Speed’s love of cars. As they are having a good night, Pops is confronted by thugs from the Tiger Syndicate. They are trying to get Pops to build cars for them, but when he refuses, they rough him up. Leaving him in a bad way, it’s up to Speed to get him to the hospital. While Speed is trying to save Pops, the mysterious Racer X is sending his own message to the Tiger Syndicate.

The Legacy Continues

The first issue of Speed Racer fires on all cylinders and delivers one hell of a joy ride. David Pepose hits yet another homerun and crafts yet another amazing world. The attention to detail and character development allows readers to understand and connect with the characters. The narrative is engaging, dynamic, and conveys a strong emotional depth. This is only issue one and it already has the reader on the edge of their seats. The teasing of Racer X is just icing on the cake.

The art in this issue looks awesome and really captures the vibe of the story. Davide Tinto effectively captures the essence of Palm City, skillfully blending elements reminiscent of both Miami and Detroit. Tinto’s character designs are highly impressive, capturing the essence of the source material while also incorporating his unique interpretation of each character. Rex Lokus does a fantastic job with matching colors that bring the art even more to life. Every page and every panel make you want more.
