Mayhem Rules the Day
The issue opens with a librarian named Newton Burnsmith reading to children. As the children depart, Dr. Mayhem reveals himself and exposes that Newton is a former super villain known as the Mad Bomber. Mayhem is there to get his revenge for Newton snitching on him to Crimson Justice, and let’s just say his revenge is explosive.
Across town at John’s Café, John hears of the news, well his friend tries to convince him of the return of Mayhem. Sally returns to the café and looks like she has been used as a punching bag. After a little scuffle, John takes a pretty bad fall. But this leads to a vision from the past, or is it real?
Tis the Season for Returns
This second issue really helps to expand the story well, also bringing more intrigue to this world as well. Frank Tieri does an excellent job of drawing the reader in and keeping them entranced with the multiple layers of this world. The maniacal Dr. Mayhem makes for a tremendous and purely evil villain; well, we impatiently await the return of the Crimson Justice. That dichotomy alone makes this story intriguing, but the other twists and turns are just icing on the cake.
As good as the story is, the art is equally as good. Inaki Miranda does an incredible job with the character designs. However, in this issue the pages where Mayhem is getting his revenge on the Mad Bomber are disturbing yet simply awesome. Lee Loughridge really matches the colors up perfectly with the art.
