A Fathers Choice

Edmund Irons is the Alpha of his Centurion Clan, or as he looks at it the patriarch of his family. Centurions are an immortal race that every 100 years become mortal for 27.5 days. During this time the other members of the Clan can try and kill the Alpha, which makes them the Alpha. The catch is, when the old Alpha dies, the rest of Clan becomes mortal, leaving only the new Alpha as immortal. This 100-year event is called The Centurium and that time is upon us.

Edmund Irons has been the Alpha for 2,000 years and is ready to pass on. As he has never been killed during the Centurium, he decides that he’ll name a successor and pass on. Some of his children are happy that they will become mortal and pass on, well others do not want to become mortal. An even smaller group wants to take the Alpha title from him the good old-fashioned way, by killing him. Edmund must now navigate his children to save his favorite, name his successor, and stop the wrong child from seizing power.

Who Needs Enemies with Children Like This

The first issue of this series is very good and sets the table for what’s to come. Brian Buccellato creates this world that is equal parts family drama and Highlander. This creates a very familiar, yet brand new story that brings the reader on a ride. The introduction to the family and beginning to understand their motives of each one of them paints an intriguing picture. This story can go in so many directions, which really makes for a promising series.

The art in this issue is great and has a real contemporary feel to it. Mattia Monaco does a great job with bringing the world to life and giving the family members each their own individual designs. The colors complement the art and really draw the readers’ eyes to every panel. The art is as fantastic as the story, making this issue a perfect mix.
