AQUAMAN #8: Death of a God

Published:

Arthur made a promise that he would never be anything less than the best possible version of himself that he could ever try to be. This issue puts that promise to the test as Dagon is a god that cannot be defeated. This may be the toughest battle Arthur has ever faced.

The fight for the fate of the ocean is now. This epic finale of arc one will feature the death of a god and the ultimate battle of good versus evil!

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

The Story:

All roads have led to this issue and Jeremy has crafted a splendid adventure tale that has built up like a volcano ready to erupt.

Kicking this issue off with an emotional view into Arthur’s past shows the doubts he has had and how Arthur is about as perfect a hero as DC has.

There is a blink and miss it moment at the same time that alludes to something more at play in terms of Darkseid that is setting us up for something massive.

The anticipation that has been building pays off in a big way, and Jeremy takes us down a path with Aquaman. He showcasing him in a way I don’t think we have ever seen before.

It shows off his strengths in extraordinary fashion. This first arc has been a perfect example of the heroes journey and may have just produced an instant classic on the Mount Rushmore of Aquaman stories.

The Artwork:

John and Rex deliver the power in this climactic battle. The way they took Dagon, who was already a menacing figure, and found a way to up how terrifying he truly can be was a work of art. There are some violent moments as the duo hold nothing back, impaling allies of Arthur and showcasing the true raw power that Dagon has been wielding.

There is an eye of the storm that the duo captures beautifully through their art. Arthur is floating in the ocean in a moment of stillness and a decisive moment for our hero. Rex brings in softer colors, and John delivers on how vast the ocean can be in comparison to Arthur. They then launch us into a one-shot panel of pure energy and power that may be my favorite sequence in this run to date.

Final Thoughts:

Aquaman #8 shows Arthur in a way we have never seen him before and shines the light on how pure and powerful he can truly be. This fight has been building, and it has been worth the wait as the team sticks the landing, having me dying for more.

Overall Grade: 10/10
