WOLVERINE #11 – “Only A Mother”

Published:

This Wolverine run has been amazing from the start, and I’m loving the current story arc. Last we saw Logan, he had made it back to where he grew up. He knew the note that lured him there was a trap, but he never could have predicted coming face to face with the literal ghosts of his biological and “adopted” fathers. Even more unexpected was the very much alive woman he sees staring back at him, claiming to be the mother who killed herself after learning her son was a mutant. A bit less surprising, but always welcomed, was an attack from Sabretooth.

The Story for WOLVERINE #11

Throughout this entire issue Sabretooth and Wolverine are not holding back. As they go claw to claw there is brut strength, berserker rage, and a lot of blood. All the while, the story is beautifully being told from inside and outside Logan’s head. As his mother stands to the side pleading for it to stop, and assuring Logan she is there, he still must stop his oldest foe. As he tries to protect the first woman he ever loved, his mother, he also shows her the side of him that caused her to leave to him. We’re then left with a moment of shock on the last page.

The Art

So much gore in this issue, and it was perfectly done on every page. From the SNIKT moments, to the exhausted moments, and everything in between. We see an angry, and vulnerable Logan, and every emotion shined through the blood to further tell the story of a young mutant boy abandoned by the one person whose never supposed to abandon you. Absolutely beautiful art to capture a tragically beautiful story.

Overall Grade: 10/10

I have been a fan of this run since the first issue. It’s given me everything I love about Wolverine, but flipped all my expectations in different directions. So, while I’m constantly feeling that this is exactly what I should expect from Wolvie, I’m always surprised.

This issue in particular may be my favorite so far. While Logan is not unknown to show his vulnerable side, this was different. Bringing up a past from before he was Logan or The Wolverine, brought out a raw vulnerability that only childhood trauma can do. Throughout these pages I was completely sucked in, all while wondering what comes next, how did that happen? Every Wolverine fan should absolutely have this at the top of their pull list. SNIKT!
