The Kai-Sei Era Begins
The issue opens with a prologue where it is explained what the Kai-Sei era is. Kai-Sei is the power that the Kaiju are powered by, and Godzilla is the most powerful of all. The coastal cities like New York all walled off and fortified to help protect from Kaiju attacks. The United States are also protected by an elite force known as the G-Force USA. The team is made up of Nuki, Incense, Jet Jaguar, Commander Rivera, and from the Japanese G-Force Dr. Rumi Chiba. It is also explained that there are what are known as G-Mutants who have been mutated with powers or deformities. They discover a young man who appears to have Kai-Sei powers and recruit him to the G-Force, the young man’s name is Jacen.
As Jacen is brought to the G-Force base in San Diego, his training begins. But he is also being watched as no one knows much about him and that mystery could be dangerous. Jacen takes a liking to Dr. Chiba mostly because she is different from the others. Jacen’s training gets cut short as the team gets summoned to take on a Kaiju named Anguirus. As the team dispatches of the threat the drift between the Commander’s way and Chiba’s way really takes center stage. However, they need to get on the same page fast, as a new threat is lurking in the deep.
Danger Lurks in the Shadows
Godzilla #1 is a great start to a brand-new era of this amazing franchise. Tim Seeley does an amazing job of shaping this new world and mythology. Taking the original story, we all know and love, but then infusing it with some deeper and unique elements that make the story feel fresh. The groundwork that was laid down in this issue will make the reader excited for what’s to come in this new line.
The art in this issue is really cool and gives this book a completely new identity. Nikola Čižmešija does an excellent job with the character designs, borrowing from characters and creatures of the past, well putting his own flare on it. The colors match the art and really give the world a unique look. Every panel jumps off the page and catches the reader’s eye.

Final Thoughts
Godzilla #1 kicks off a new and exciting era for the Godzilla franchise in comic books. If this first issue is any indication, we are going to be on one hell of a ride. I for one can not wait for issue two, and the adjacent series’ that will make up this new universe. This is a must have and you should run to your LCS and pick up a copy before they are gone.
Overall Grade: 10/10
