Strangers in a New City
We open with a brief history of the partnership between the two champions of Earth, the Elemental Guardian and the High Priest of Earth respectively. Fast forward to the present and we see that the High Priest Gaia is being held captive by Lucian Plunder at his Plundertech Industries building. Plunder wants to get control of the five elemental rings so he can gain ultimate power on the planet. The problem is that the rings have already been scattered and acquired by their newest wielders. Bad news for the elemental guardians is that they are all on their way to New York and Plunder is ready to ambush them.
As the guardians arrive, they all meet up with each other by happenstance. Kwame and Gi bump into each other at the airport, when Gi fan girls for the former footballer. They are both detained by what appears to be police, and that’s when they discover what they have in common. Meanwhile, Linka is making her way through the city when she comes across a protest. At the protest Wheeler accidentally unleashes his fire power, which causes a riot and a fight with Linka.
Kwame and Gi escape the fake police using their powers and come across the battle of Linka and Wheeler. As they try and break it up, they get pulled into the fight with the two hotheads. As the fight intensifies Plunder sends his men to go take out the guardians and get their rings. Thankfully Ma-Ti breaks up the fight and gets the guardians on the same team. But how will they defeat Plunder’s men who are now engaging the group? Simple, they let their powers combine.
Take Pollution Down to Zero
This issue does an awesome job of continuing to introduce the guardians, well also finding interesting ways for them to find each other. David Pepose does an amazing job of making the reader care for the characters and their new journey in a strange city. The battles they encounter and engage in are very good and go to show they have a lot to learn. This makes for great development, instead of just making it so they can wield their powers perfectly out of the gate.
The art in this issue is fantastic and really captures the original source material well also making it their own. Eman Casallos character designs are out of this world good. The originality mixed with the familiarity of the characters really stands out. The backgrounds and action sequences are also portrayed very good as well. Jorge Sutil compliments the art with his color pallet and really makes each panel come to life.
