Dance with the Devil

Toxie seemingly gets thrown out of a plane and lands smack dab in the middle of the frozen swamps of New Jersey. As he wanders through the swamp he comes across an odd diner in the middle of nowhere. The Roach Diner brings back some memories that Melvin has suppressed for years. He remembers going there as a member of the quiz-bowl team in high school. Well, there he remembers it somehow being tied into the legend of the Jersey Devil.

No matter what the memories were, Toxie is hungry, and you can’t beat a good old New Jersey diner. So, he enters the diner and proceeds to order a ton of food, but then realizes he recognizes the server. At that point Toxie attacks the server and challenges him to show that he is actually the Jersey Devil. The problem is the server isn’t the devil, but the devil reveals himself and challenges Toxie. As Toxie and the Jersey Devil battle each other, who will get the win and the title of the best monster in New Jersey?

The Battle for New Jersey

The second issue of this wild team-up series is a ton of fun and very entertaining. Stuart Moore does a great job of taking such a ridiculous premise and making it more entertaining than it has any right to be. Moore reminds us that comics don’t always have to be serious or streamlined sometimes all we need is fun, and this book delivers that hands down.

The art in this book is equally fun and very cool. Ryan Kelly does a great job with the character designs and the sets as well. Lee Loughridge compliments the art with some awesome colors that fit perfectly. The old-style colors making the diner look like it is stuck in time is a huge cherry on top.

Final Thoughts

Toxie Team-Up #2 continues the fun nature of these fun team-up books. Starting with the epitome of good, and moving to an evil, yet legendary myth shows how dynamic they are willing to go. If you are looking for an incredibly fun read, grab a copy at the LCS this week and enjoy the ride.
