The Toxic Holy Duo Has Arrived

Tromaville Night Court is in session and the judge is presiding over a very interesting case where the defendant is the one and only Jesus H. Christ. Jesus created a commotion at the Tromaville Megachurch and for this infraction he is sentenced to forty hours of community service. This community service will be carried out at the soup kitchen called Soup or Sandwich.

Upon starting at the kitchen Jesus meets Melvin, better known as the Toxic Avenger. He finds out that Melvin is the janitor and the security guard. The latter is because Melvin’s anger makes him a scary individual, which doesn’t please Jesus. However, Jesus soon discovers that the place is being ran by Mr. Frank, who is trying to get the downtrodden to sample toxic waste for his personal gain. Jesus can’t stand for this, but he also can’t fight this battle alone.

The Match Made in Heaven

The first issue of this new series is a very entertaining and fun ride. The book doesn’t really take itself seriously, well at the same time still delivering a good story. Mark Russell walks the fine line between innocent entertaining and being offensive to a sector of the population expertly. Never does the book disrespect the Christian faith or portray Jesus in a bad light, which is a credit to Mark’s writing.

The art in this book is what we’ve come to expect from The Toxic Avenger series that Ahoy Comics have been putting out. A great take on an iconic character that is familiar but also feels fresh. Richard Pace does a great job of bringing Tromaville to life and his character designs are just as great.

Final Thoughts

Toxie Team-Up #1 is a very fun and entertaining first issue that will make readers feel pure joy. With a concept that could fall off the rail easily, the fact that it doesn’t is a testament to how good the story is. If you are looking for a fun read that will bring a smile to your face, pick this book up at the LCS this week.

Overall Grade: 9/10
