This will be the first live action DC film under a new dynamic duo’s reign. James Gunn & Peter Safran were announced taking over DC Studios for Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022. Since then, there have been many rumors and speculation on what is next.

One thing was very certain. The pair wasn’t wasting time in setting the pace early. In January of 2023, it was announced that Gunn would be directing a new “Superman“. Since that point, news has been trickling out about what and who is going to be included in the film.

MORE SUPERMAN COMICS!

Little did anyone know a Threads question *might* have tipped off some ideas.

A Threads user asked Gunn what were other inspirations for the upcoming film. Gunn responded with some art panel of a few classic Superman stories. Is that all the tricks up his sleeve?

Knowing his history with comic characters and movies, the comic readers were excited to see some of the selections. Remember, Gunn made magic with the “Guardians Of The Galaxy” franchise. Fans saw the influence of the Abnett/Lanning run.

SUPERMAN: FOR ALL SEASONS (1998)

Creative Team: Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale, Bjarne Hansen & Richard Starkings

A heartfelt look into the early beginnings of one Clark Kent. Loeb and the late Tim Sale were known as a force off their masterpiece “Batman: The Last Halloween.” Seeing the pair reunite for Superman came with huge expectations. By the time the conclusion dropped, there was no doubt they gave fans another classic story.

Using the four seasons as a backdrop, readers tagged along during the transition phase for young Clark. Seeing the evolution into Superman from Jonathan Kent’s view in Book one set the pace. Clark’s journey from novice Smallville hero into Metropolis’ protector gave new takes on the classic supporting cast. A simple undercover plan by Lois Lane turned into more than bargained for.

The story also danced with the idea of Lex Luthor’s motivations. Watching his twisted “love” story with his city unfold showcased how determined Luthor was to succeed. It also gave readers a deeper look at the weight Superman carries. The parting chapter ties everything up nicely to launching Superman’s next phase. If the movie captures this aura, fans are in for something special.

LEX LUTHOR: MAN OF STEEL (2005)

Creative Team: Brian Azzarello, Lee Bermejo, Dave Stewart and Rob Leigh

A hero is only as good as his villain rival. One of the most anticipated performances of the film is Nicholas Hoult‘s Lex Luthor. Playing one of the most iconic villains is a true challenge. Deep diving into his motivations is a whole other ballgame

With this series, Azzarello wasted little time in projecting a new vision of Luthor. He is selfish in every aspect. That cannot be denied. Where this series went differently is where it pertains to Superman. This wasn’t about him winning. For Luthor, it was about saving the world.

The writing spotlights his vision of himself as a savior. This goes with the narcissistic demeanor he carries but to a whole new level. “Stopping an alien threat” consumes every action. It leads him into walking fine lines. Even confronting Bruce Wayne for help turned into a shocking moment.

The final chapter clears any doubt of how dark his ego can be. There is plenty of justified ends to means played out. It leaves readers with a disturbing notion of his “dream.” Hoult should have no issue bringing this side of the classic villain out. The audience reaction should be priceless for this.

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN (2005)

Creative Team: Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely, Jamie Grant & Phil Balsman

In recent years, this series has been touted in the lists of “Greatest Superman Stories Ever.” After a rescue mission near the sun amplifies Superman’s powers, it also leads to a new fate. The solar intake is now killing him. The truly unthinkable is happening. Superman is facing certain death.

Morrison brings out many themes during this story. Readers see everything from Lois Lane granted powers for a day to arguing with Atlas and Sampson for Lane’s attention. The playbook is wide open as this version of Superman takes many risks while breaking the mold. Even dynamics with villains like Bizarro get a wild upgrade.

Being under the “All-Star” brand allowed many creative freedoms. It also gave readers a lasting impression of hope with Supes saving a teen from jumping off a ledge. The dialogue drives home how even when dying, Superman strives to save others.

HOW ABOUT ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN!

Of course, there is no way this story doesn’t happen without Luthor. In his obsession to kill Superman, his role shines in its deviousness. There are elements that take from the late Gene Hackman’s performance while crafting his own over-the-top confidence. It results in a grand finale for the ages. In just 12 issues, the saga told pushed boundaries and set a high bar which influences today. Most Superman stories after this one can’t escape its’ impact and lasting effects on the legacy. This one is a no-brainer on why its’ influencing the movie.

KINGDOM COME (1996)

Creative Team: Mark Waid, Alex Ross & Todd Klein

The last story making this list is one that wound up becoming more than just a Superman story. It became a possible fate of the DCU. What Superman represents is not just hope to the world. He represents the standards and ideals of what heroes strive to be. This has led to more like-minded heroes working together in such faction as the Justice League.

In this story, a new order of superheroes has emerged. They’re younger, reckless and more violent than their predecessors. The old guard of original heroes are called back to the forefront to stop their reign.

Seeing the clash of age and ethics proved very powerful. The story transcended just a good vs. evil theme. It made readers question the authority and ultimate responsibility of right vs. wrong. Does Superman have to answer to anyone if he feels the need to save others as he sees it? The story throws many looks in veiled by Ross’s amazing artwork.

With its’ closing chapter, readers are left with many lingering notions of the final outcome. In connection to the movie, there have been some signs of how Superman crossed political lines to save someone. We can’t forget about a new Justice League involved as Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner. How Gunn factors this in will be one to watch for.

AND REMEMBER….#LOOKUP

Each story mentioned takes a unique look at the mythos of the Man Of Steel’s world. However they dive in on the principles of “Big Blue” and company, they each hit high marks. Combined in one film and fans better prepare for an all-time classic. Don’t forget “Superman” hits theaters in the US on July 11th.
