The Story and Writing

Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne are accompanying their friends Daily Planet’s editor-in-chief Perry White and Gotham’s police commissioner Jim Gordon as they are to appear on a controversial podcast. The podcast, ‘It’s Happening with Frank Rotsler’, is known for its negativity and the host’s bullying ways.

Rotsler likes to trash Gotham any chance he gets on his podcast, so Gordon is here to stick up for his city. While Gordon is beside himself in nervousness, Perry is there to calm him down, even if he doesn’t take his own advice himself.

While they go on air with Rotsler, it’s very clear that this wasn’t meant to be a civil conversation. Before the conversation goes even more South, they’re interrupted by a Kaiju-size monster ripping through the building. Gordon and Perry say to evacuate the building but Rotsler has other plans.

They involve continuing the livestream, putting everyone’s life in danger. Fortunately for everyone, Superman and Batman are right in the other room, and are ready to fight. But the question stands, where did this monster come from? Why did it attack this building? And how could anyone be as unlikeable as Frank Rotsler?!

Mark Waid, the writer for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #40, brings a high energy story that keeps you on your toes throughout the read. There were a couple humorous moments that I really appreciated, but other than that, the tone was consistently exciting.

The Art

Adrián Gutiérrez, who does the art for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #40, made sure to match the tone of the story with the artwork. Gutiérrez paid an impressive amount of attention to the details of each panel, which made each page feel like a work of art. Matched with Matt Herms’ work on the colors, this was guaranteed to be a stunning comic. Steve Wands is behind the lettering of the book, and he proves, yet again, that he never misses. All in all, the creative team did a fantastic job on Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #40.

Final Thoughts

I had a great time with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #40! Mark Waid knows how to keep your eyes glued to the pages, with the fantastic creative team behind him.
