The Story:

The story from Charles is doing an excellent job at keeping the audience on their toes while both answering questions and introducing new mysteries in this issue. Matt’s inner struggle and monologue are captured extraordinarily well along with the help of Clayton’s lettering and takes us inside the mind of this aging Matt Murdock.

I was hoping we would see two familiar characters again in Foggy and Elektra and Charles did not let us down. There are breadcrumbs laid out such as Matt leaving law after what went down with Kingpin which we get some story in the previous issue but, I am curious what went down. It is a well written tender moment between Foggy and Matt showing two old friends who still have love for another. In contrast Bullseye is still an absolute psycho and the tone switch in this story is done seamlessly setting up a showdown in the future.

The Art:

Steve and Dean are back and nail what Charles is going for which stick around for the end pages where you can get a sneak peek at the inner workings of! The return of Elektra was drawn stunningly with her appearance being larger than life and her black hair flowing behind her as Steve was able to nail down her swift movements and fighting style.

Dean works really well in making Matt’s suit feel ragged and run down like it is supposed to be. It’s a suit that is stitched together and one that has seen better days and the coloring brings that ragged texture to the panels. This version of New York City is also one that is aged which you can see in the coloring of the streets and buildings and I feel it brings out the red in both Elektra and Daredevil’s suits almost in an inspiring way.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10

I can’t help but feel this is Daredevil and Marvel’s “Dark Knight Returns” moment—the art nails down that aged and ragged feeling and vibe. Charles is back in the driver’s seat, showing us that Matt is in a race against time, bringing finality to the story and character with this tale. I truly feel as though when all is said and done this will be an instant classic.
