Cable: Love & Chrome Breaks All the Rules!
Cable: Love & Chrome comes to a thrilling conclusion as Nathan Summers chases Cicada though multiple time streams. This creates the perfect conditions for collapsing the whole thing! Cable just wants to do right by Avery and hopefully find a happy ending for himself in the process.
Knowing that everything he’s doing is wrong, he still makes the decision to break every rule he knows. He made A very into Cicada through his rash actions before and now he’ll double down to reverse that result. That means lots of jumps and worst of all coming face to face with himself in the past. I was totally picking up on vibes of Looper as a younger Cable was steadfast in scolding his elder self. He was not even a tiny bit hesitant to fight back and pull the trigger without any thought!
In Case You Missed It: Cable: Love & Chrome #4 Destiny and The Time Traveler’s Fate
Cable: Love & Chrome Character Development
That leads us into the brilliant loop that David Pepose took us for a ride on. We see a Cable more like the one at the start of this series. He’s duty bound, cold, and a loner through and through. The Cable we know now has experienced love and happiness and found a home of people just like him. That juxtaposition provides a great conflict for story purposes. It’s a real deep dive into what makes Cable who he is and how environment truly dictates your decisions.
The Ultimates #12 – An Unexpected Truth
What is really fascinating is that Cicada or Avery has a real good reason for her motivations and honestly comes across has a sympathetic villain. She’s been tortured by Cable’s attempts to save her. When she attempts to eliminate a younger version of Cable, she’ll finds herself in a different position.
The Art of Cable: Love & Chrome
The action in this issue is cranked to a 10. Mike Henderson take us on a journey through time with various settings. From Nueva York 2099 to WW2 Russia to a Prehistoric Era, Henderson flexes his artistic muscles in the various styles and tones of environment.
Angles and depth of field play a huge part in this issue as well. Henderson captures some tense moments from short range blasts to big explosions. The action moves so well with dynamic movement and big emotional moments.
EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN #9 – It’s All for the Kids
Arif Prianto puts in some overtime with big changes in color palettes due to the time period changes. He makes excellent use of shadowing to contrasts blasts and explosions. All of these pops out on a background of pinks and purples representing the time stream.
Overall Grade 9/10
The story as a whole has been a treat and each issue seemed to raise the stakes in some way. Issue #5 keeps the pace of a freight train with each panel making me ask “what’s next?!”. Cable’s design is awesome and the techno organic virus looks so gnarly and alien which is great. This was a great way to wrap up this story and provide us with a Cable coming full circle. He’s back where he started, but he’s grown as a character. What did you think of the series?
