Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the FIRST issue of the codebreaker story in the Hyperspace Stories series from Dark Horse Comics!
This mini-series is set in the time period of the sequel era films! Now, it doesn’t explicitly state WHEN it takes place, but if I had to guess it’s some time before the events of The Force Awakens. The main character this time around is ace pilot Poe Dameron! So let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories – Codebreakers #1 by Ethan Sacks (Writer), Marc Yarza (Pencils), Jose Marzan Jr (Ink), Nicola Righi (Color), Comiccraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (Letter’s), Diego Galindo (Cover) is a great first issue that sets up nicely for the next 3 issues.
The Story
At this time, it’s an interesting point for the Star Wars galaxy. Firstly, the New Republic is still around and the First Order is on the rise and gaining power. Secondly, Leia has seen the impending threat from the First Order and she has started the Resistance movement.
Following an opening sequence that felt like something out of a James Bond movie, General Leia has a mission for Poe. Moreover that mission is that somehow the First Order is moving ships around the galaxy without any interference from the Republic or the Resistance. Above all else, it’s Poe’s job to go out and find how exactly they’re doing this.
Without a doubt the story is a great one, and it’s a fantastic first issue. Furthermore it sets up incredibly well for the future issues in what’s sure to be a great story. In addition to this I like the twist that the mission brings him into Hutt controlled space. Especially since we don’t really know what’s happened to the Hutts post Episode VI.
The Artwork
Marc Yarza, Joser Marzan Jr & Nicola Righi are all incredible with their work in the issue. Undoubtedly it’s always a challenge when you’re taking live action characters to a 2D format. Nevertheless the entire team is incredible with the work they’ve done. Especially when it comes to Poe & Leia in the issue. They look just like they do in the films, and the new characters blend so well together!
FINAL POINT
Anytime you deal with anything to do with the sequel era these days feels like a tense prospect to say the least. Nevertheless the entire creative team have started crafting a story that has a feel like one of those classic stories you’d read from the Star Wars universe. If you’re a fan of Star Wars, you should definitely pick this one up. It’s a fun, light read that sets up nicely for the next few issues.
Overall Grade: 9.0/10
