Predator vs Spider-Man is a Fever Dream Come True!
This is it fans! The moment we’ve all been waiting for! Well, at least I have. Ever since we started these Predator crossover events with Wolverine, I’ve been like a kid in a candy store. Predator vs Wolverine felt like the peak. That’s it, we don’t need anymore, this is what heaven feels like. Then, we got Black Panther vs Predator and that was an absolute treat! “Where do we go from there”, we thought? How about Marvel’s “Golden Goose” himself, Spider-Man! I was elated at the announcement and now that it’s finally here, I’m happy to report that it doesn’t disappoint!
It’s the Summer of Predator vs Spider-Man
This story kicks off in the dead heat of summer in New York City. These are the summers we’ve heard tell of and seen in movies. The heat is unbearable. People are doing everything they can to relieve themselves of the pressure. It’s sweaty, it’s stinky, and it’s a pot ready to boil over with violence! That violence comes in the form of three bodies, hung upside down, skinned, and missing body parts. Detective LaPearl is on the scene to investigate and it’s a horrific site. Hiding in plain site is Peter Parker! After some questions and pictures, he’s off to work before anyone knows he was there!
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 – THE REBIRTH OF A WEB HEAD
Peter is in a bind as always. The Daily Bugle is struggling to stay relevant and this is just the story to pick things up. J Jonah Jameson wants to use it to spread panic, where as Pete just wants to warn people to be safe in the streets. Before he can deliver the scoop though, he has a run in with bank robbers that end up running into the serial killer Peter is looking for!
One thing leads to another and by the end of the issue conditions are perfect for the Predator to wreak havoc on the city. First up is a stranded group of people in a subway car that just so happens be the current location of one Mary Jane Watson!
A Set-up For the Perfect Predator vs Prey Conditions!
Benjamin Percy does it AGAIN! We have a set up that causes dominoes to fall until we’re in the perfect situation for a Predator vs Spider-Man story. A heat wave in the city, a serial killer on the lose, Peter under pressure from work, Spider-Man in the crosshairs of the cops, MJ in danger…I could go on and on but the fact is, Percy is constructing a banger of a Spider-Man story! That story just so happens to coincide with a deranged Predator killing people, skinning them, claiming body parts as a prize, and acting like terrifying version of Leatherface!
Web of VenomVerse #1 – Meet VenomMouse and Venomizer
This feels like prime Spider-Man as a character and I love that. Between his dialogues with Detective LaPear to his arguments with Jameson, it all feels so…Parker. Then beneath all of that is this Predator that seems a little more into the idea of torturing his prey and enjoying the “trophies” in a sadistic way is a fun take on these species we already know so well. The story as a whole reminds me of Summer of Sam in a way. It skirts the line of Crime Thriller and Horror so well. It adds to the bold line that Spider-Man is a good guy fighting a terrible evil. No blurring the roles here.
Predator vs Spider-Man is a Visually Visceral Experience
What a pleasure it was to not only read this book and enjoy the story, but to see it via the outstanding creative artwork team. It has that classic Spider-Man feel with hints of Bagley, McFarlane, Larsen, and a touch of Romita. The angles and the movements make for dynamic action that is exciting to follow along with. The horrific scenes of mutilated bodies and even witnessing the skin being pulled from the face of a victim is fantastic! They didn’t hold back on the body horror and I appreciate that! It’s not for the faint of heart!
SPIDER-GWEN: THE GHOST-SPIDER #12 – New Planet, New Problems
The color work is immersive and beautiful. The heat of New York burns off of the pages in oranges, yellows, and reds. The moments of darkness in the subway and during the blackout change the tone completely to a cold palette, teasing realization only to keep you in suspense of danger. Then there’s the gore. What a way to highlight that in reds, purples, black ink! It’s such an immersive and eye catching experience page 1 to 31.
Overall Grade: 10/10
Non stop action and horror will keep you turning the page and loving every moment! This is the way you do it! We have Spider-Man story telling that pulls no punches. Artwork that isn’t afraid to take chances while honoring the characters rich visual history. Everything about this book is fantastic and I con’t think of a better way to kick off the series. Movie fans, Spider-Man fans, Predator fans…RUN, don’t walk, to your LCS for this issue and put it on the pull list or you will regret it!
