The Story

After Doctor Stephen Strange relinquished his powers of Sorcerer Supreme to Doctor Doom, he’s been keeping pretty quiet, probably due to the humiliation of it all. Nevertheless, Doctor Strange isn’t someone to stay dormant for long. He makes his way to another realm to offer himself up for the role of Sorcerer Supreme for all of Asgard. These turned into more of a process than he suspected, even with Thor’s blessing. Thor said he would support Strange’s request if he got permission from the magical authority of Asgard, which means it was time for Strange to meet Hulda.

The meeting with Hulda was going as well as it could until Loki appeared, even though exiled, and killed Hulda. Loki is adamant that while they were the one who killed her, it wasn’t them who actually did it. Loki says someone must have possessed them. Surprisingly so, Strange believes the mischievous god, but that means he needs to find out who’s actually behind the killing. Strange must perform a Spell of Ahkrynon, and that means he needs access to all the power he can possibly get his hands on, which includes Asgardian magic.

Since Strange is still a stranger to Asard, not knowing where to go, who to talk to, or who is who, he needs a guide to assist him. After asking a few Asgardians he met the day prior, and them turning him down, he finally finds help in Aslak, who is a sorcerer in training. Hopefully with Aslak’s help, Strange can find out who killed Hulda, and who possessed Loki to frame them into looking like they did it. Also to add even more complications, he must do all of this under Thor’s nose, as even more of a riff between Loki and their brother could lead to disaster.

The Writing

Derek Landy sets the tone rather immediately with Doctor Strange talking to himself about hiding a body, which shows that we’re picking up right where we left off with the first installment.

The comic keeps that same energy throughout the read as Strange has so many things to accomplish before finding out who’s behind this senseless killing. So far, I’m really enjoying Doctor Strange of Asgard, and the second installment kept the same dark and mystical feelings as the first comic had. there’s so much mystery surrounding the storyline, it makes me really excited to see what’s next!

Also, I was really excited to see that Clea is involved! I’ve always liked her and Strange’s relationship, so it’s great to see her helping out wherever she can.

The Art

Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern, and Cory Petit are the artists of Doctor Strange of Asgard #2, and they continue to impress. Magno capture the magical darkness of Doctor Strange and Asgard, with providing so much detail in each panel. Grundetjern uses the darkest colors, with juxtaposing bright colors that adds a lot of excitement to the pages. Some of my favorite parts include Strange, Clea, and Loki, that turns into a gorgeous full page of the three flexing their powers, with the most beautiful colors and details.

Overall Grade – 8.7/10
