Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the 16th issue of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures from Daniel Jose Older & Dark Horse Comics!
The battle continues on Eriadu between the Nihil and our heroes, with things getting more desperate as time goes on. Apocalyptic destruction might be in the future, but if Farzala Tarabal has anything to say about it they won’t come to pass. So with that said, let’s jump into it!
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #16 by Daniel Jose Older (Writer), Toni Bruno (Illustrator), Michael Atiyeh (Color Art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (Letters), Harvey Tolibao & Kevin Tolibao (Cover) is a solid issue that fans of the series will enjoy, but it doesn’t necessarily move the needle all that much for the casual fan.
Story
The story is a continuation of what we’ve seen the last couple of issues, and follows some similar beats. And it really isn’t until the last couple of pages that the story starts to pick up and get very interesting. It’s a moment I’m sure fans of The High Republic have been anticipating for some time now (I know I have), and it appears we’re finally at that moment. No I’m not talking about the demise of Marchion Ro, I’m talking about another moment. I won’t spoil it here, but I was surprised to finally see it appear to happen.
The story is good if you’ve been keeping up with the series, and one that I think those that have been reading most (if not all) of The High Republic material will want to read. But the story isn’t anything super revolutionary or earth shattering.
Artwork
The artwork is the real stand out portion of the issue. Toni Bruno & Michael Atiyeh really created some awesome work in this issue. And particularly the battle scenes are spectacular and noteworthy. They do a fantastic job capturing a battle taking place across a city and giving it a grand scale. You don’t see that very often in Star Wars on tv/movie screens with the only occasion I can think of being The Battle of Coruscant, and most of that was in space.
FINAL POINT: The issue is a solid one if you’ve been keeping up with the series, and it’s one you’re going to want to pick up. And that especially goes for if you’ve been reading The High Republic material overall. If you have, you’re not going to want to miss this. But for those who haven’t, this might not be for you. It’s still a good story, with some fantastic artwork. And the ending leaves me very interested to see how things play out in the next issue.
Overall Grade: 7/10
