BE SURE TO CATCH UP WITH SENTINELS #4 HERE!
The Story
The Sentinels program is broken beyond prepare, especially with Dr. Corina Ellis taking control of it all. She has certainly made a mess of the program and the people in it, like Trask, who’s been taken hostage by Scurvy under Ellis’ orders. Meanwhile, we lost a team member, Voivod, after he sacrificed himself so Sawtooth could find the source of Trask’s Sentinel nanotech, which goes by the name of Juston Seyfert.
With all that going on, we still have Drumfire who’s dealt with intense hallucinations and has been taking the mood stabilizers to get away from them. Drumfire finally found the cause of her hallucinations, and it’s none other than Charles Xavier, who’s an inmate at Graymalkin prison. On top of all of that, Lockstep, who’s on his way to death, has decided to be rebuilt into one of Ellis’ new Sentinels. With all this going on, I’m actually really surprised how Alex Paknadel was able to fit all of this into one comic book.
In Sentinels #5, Sawtooth gets up close and personal to Juston Seyfert, but while that’s happening, she realizes she’s starting the process of grafting. Seyfert shows empathy for her, which leads Sawtooth to attempting to break the glass that holds him prisoner. But she’s interrupted by Ellis’ newest Sentinel, Lockstep, who tries to stop her by violently ripping off Sawtooth’s hand.
Meanwhile, Drumfire is coming to terms with what, or should I say who, is causing her hallucinations, which is Xavier. It turns out, Xavier was trying to contact her to give her a warning.
The Writing
Alex Paknadel created a grounded and exciting comic run that was filled with characters that I truly enjoyed getting to know. I’m disappointed it only lasted 5 installments as I’d grown to want to know more and more about these characters. But with this being the ending, I think Paknadel handled it really well. So many moving parts were happening but was handled with ease, and felt like it all flowed very well.
The Art
The artwork of Sentinels has been consistently great, with absolutely nothing I could complain about. The artwork, drawn by Justin Mason, has matched the tone of the storyline and brought an all new depth to the characters. I think what stands out to me the most are the characters facial expressions and how well you can see just how each character is feeling easily. Federico Blee did a fantastic job on the colors, as it gave the more grounded story that big X-Men vibe with the bright colors juxtaposing the dark details.
Overall Grade – 9.3/10
