The Story

With Doctor Doom naming himself the Emperor of the World, it seems that every hero has been turned upside down, with new missions that all lead back to Doom. In this case, we start with Wolverine, who is on the hunt for someone who’s stolen an large amount of adamantium.

While his search proves to be unsuccessful, he still treats himself to a few drinks at a bar, but it’s anything but taking a usual load off. As he’s leaving the bar, he’s attacked in the elevator by some form of gas that’s meant to mess with his powers. But, of course, that’s not the full extent of the attack, as someone cut the cords to the elevator he’s in, causing significant damage to the hotel.

Creating the Team

While this trip certainly started off on less than ideal terms, it seems to get more frustrating for Wolverine. As he’s showering off the stresses of the day, who’s to show up in his bathroom, none other than the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool. Deadpool says the word on the street is that someone’s trying to take Wolverine out, which Wolverine says comes with the territory.

While he’s dealing with Deadpool, it seems that that’s not the only superpowered hero that’s seeking out Wolverine, as Cable flies in on his helicopter saying Wolverine’s skills are needed. Cable is very hush hush about what exactly what the mission is, but before they can start, Cable, Wolverine, and Deadpool need to make a stop along the way to recruit more help. This leads them to their newest team member, Jonothon Starsmore, AKA Chamber.

With the new team now formed, and what Deadpool has named Weapon X-Men, they are on their way to the secret mission, and that takes them to the home of Doctor Doom, Latveria. What’s the mission? Well, it involves a mutant that’s said to be dead, but do mutants really ever stay dead? This one certainly didn’t. John Proudstar, AKA Thunderbird, is who they’re in Latveria to see about. But there’s much more to be revealed while they’re there, and it seems the team already has some problems of their own.

The Writing

Joe Casey formed a team of individuals that just shouldn’t work together, but they absolutely do. Deadpool, Wolverine, Cable, Chamber, and Thunderbird all bring their own set of skills to the team. I can’t wait to see how they play off of each other. Weapon X-Men #1 has quite a few moving parts that were written expertly to flow properly, while still having a factor or two that surprises you.

I’m excited to see where the story goes and how it connects to Doctor Doom being the Emperor of the World. So far, the team feels really strong, and the story is really compelling. Joe Casey created something very fun that keeps you locked into the story. I’d say it’s a very strong start.

The Art

With Mark Morales on inks, ChrisCross handling the penciling, and Yen Nitro on colors, this was sure to be a visually exciting comic, and it absolutely is. What I think stands out the most is how the powersets of the team is portrayed, making you feel like you’re right in the action. Along with the larger than life powersets, the characters themselves really look the part as the main characters. They each have their own spotlight on them and are given their time to shine, without watering down the others.

Overall Grade – 9/10
