Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #3:

With the Disney + show well underway, we’re getting an intimate look at this animated Spider-Man’s origin and it differs greatly from the original comics with some nice ties to the original.

In this version, Spider-Man and his friend Nico are doing everything in their power to stop mod boss Silvio Manfredi from destroying their high school.

He still has to deal with all the problems of a teenager with super powers, but with a much more modern twist.

The Art:

I’m a HUGE fan of bringing back classic villains that this generation may not have ever seen or heard of. In issue #3, we get the Enforcers, a group of low-level villains dating back all the way to ASM #10 in the 1960’s!

I love seeing the cartoon versions of these classic villains from a time where comic book characters were … well basically cartoons of the 60’s. Spider-Man wasn’t as established back them in our culture, so this retread really makes sense and just fits. Plus, I’ll sign up any day to write reviews on Fancy Dan and Montana.

This book is for fans of all ages and it’s fun to see Peter still trying to figure out his greatness.

The art compliments the narrative well and it’s feels like a vintage book.

The Writing:

The writing really feels like a teenage adventure comic, with Peter and Nico teaming up to save their little town from the Enforcers. I really like this pairing, as they have that friendly banter and playful nature.

As I said about the art, the writing is light, easy to digest and made for anyone from a kid learning to read to an aging comic critic, who’s been a Spider-Man fan for more than three decades (that’s me :).

The scenes with Aunt May are also just as impactful as in the original series. That relationship is key to who Peter is and why he does what he does. I also love the football narrative as it ties into Tom Holland’s dialogue with Tony Stark way back in Captain America: Civil War.

Overall Grade: 8.5/10

These books are a blast. They bring out the kid in me at a time when i really need him. As you get older, it’s tough having that child-like enthusiasm, but more important than ever to remember that aspect of your life and personality.

Maybe that’s super deep, but that is why Spider-Man is the all-time great – he dares us to dream big!
