Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And since this weekend is the BIGGEST Star Wars day of the entire year, I’m going to be giving you MY Top 5 Star Wars Comics EVER!
Now, just to lay some ground rules for this list before we get started. First, this is my list. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and if you don’t agree with mine…that’s fine. I realize some of you will have a different list than me and that’s fine! Second, I’m going to be looking at the ENTIRE history of Star Wars. So that means the original Marvel run, Dark Horse, IDW & current Marvel run are all on the table. Finally, I’m ranking this based on the entire series and not just one specific issue over another.
So with that in mind, let’s get right into it!
#5 – The Star Wars (2013)
First up is probably the one of the more intriguing entries on this list. In 2013 Dark Horse took the ORIGINAL rough draft of Star Wars that was written by George Lucas and turned it into a comic. Written by Jonathan Rinzler with artwork done by Mike Mayhew, this is a comic that EVERY Star Wars fan should read at some point!
#4 – The Dark Empire
Next up is a comic that was released starting back in 1991 in Dark Empire. Tom Veitch was the writer, with Cam Kennedy & Jim Baikie on the artwork and this story is set 6 years after the events of Return of the Jedi. So that means that the New Republic is in it’s infancy, and very much fragile. This comic has it all if you’re a fan of the original trilogy.
#3 – Star Wars Infinites
Third on my list is a series of comics that I really feel every fan should read at least once. And if you’re a fan of Marvel Comic’s What If, then you’re going to LOVE this series. It’s a series of 12 comics (4 issues per original film) that started in May 2001 and ended in March 2004. And this series takes what you know about the story and flips it on it’s head.
It hit’s SOME of the familiar moments you know, but then some other moments it takes a different turn. Like what happens if Han DIDN’T make it to Luke at the beginning of Empire Strikes Back? And that’s just one of a bunch of great moments. I really wish they would do this again for the Prequel & Sequel films.
#2 – Star Wars: Bounty Hunters
Next up is a series that started in March of 2020 and is a must read if you’re a fan of Boba Fett and the various other bounty hunters in Star Wars. Written by Ethan Sacks with artwork done by Natacha Bustos, Alessandro Miracolo, Lan Medina and many others, this series is fantastic! It’s set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. If you were disappointed with the less than stellar screen time the bounty hunters got, this is the series for you! Boba Fett, Bossk & Dengar, oh my!
#1 – Star Wars: Darth Vader
Lastly and certainly not leastly in my list is, in my opinion, the BEST Star Wars comic series EVER written. Written by the INCREDIBLE Charles Soule this entire series is a MUST own for every Star Wars fan. It starts right at the end of the events of Revenge of the Sith it really does a phenomenal job of exploring the most recognizable villain in cinematic history and delves into the character more than we’ve ever seen.
So there you have it! That is my top 5 Star Wars Comics ever! That was only 5, and I can certainly think of some more than I should’ve included in the list but it was just way too competitive a list to get into. From Tales of the Jedi, Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Times, The High Republic & Legacy, there are SO MANY Star Wars comics out there. And there’s somewhere out there for everyone to enjoy over the entire nearly 50 year history of Star Wars!
