Into the home of the foe

In Psylocke #3, Kwannon was invited to meet the person behind all of these strange half animal cyborg attacks, and it turns out the name is Ty Haniver. Ty is a wealthy man with a rare genetic mutation with an obsession for taxonomy. After Ty invited her to his home, Kwannon realizes that his home doesn’t look like a home, like a museum. A museum covered in the skeletons of dead mutated animals.

His strange affinity for nature’s mutations, and mutations of his own making is very obvious once Kwannon makes it into his house. But the mutations aren’t the only strange occurrence in the house, as Kwannon swears she saw Revanche. Kwannon thinks the house is messing with her head.

As she starts to zero in on Ty, she realizes that he must have moved on from animals and turn his fascination to mutants like Kwannon. Kwannon is livid as she says that mutants are already hunted and killed for being who they are, and Ty has all of these mutant’s corpses on display. She confronts Ty about this, but something even more strange is going on, as Kwannon is attacked by Betsy Braddock. What is going on in this house?

The Writing

Alyssa Wong continues to do a great job having a well balanced mixture of Kwannon’s presence and past in every installment. I really enjoy the flashbacks of her life with The Hand, and where she learned to become the incredible ninja she is today.

Something else I really enjoy about Psylocke #4 is how dark the story continues to be. Kwannon herself is a pretty dark character, so I really love how the story fits her so perfectly. The story also gives us a chance to see just how skilled a ninja she really is, and we get to see all of her talents showcased.

The Art

With guest artist, Moisés Hidalgo, taking the reins on Psylocke #4, I wasn’t sure what to expect as I have loved all of the art in the past issues. Hidalgo did a fantastic job in the fourth installment and really captured the eerie feeling that is present throughout the comic. When Kwannon is inside Ty’s home, there’s a ominous energy throughout the comic as you don’t know what she is about to walk into, and Hidalgo nailed it. Along with Fer Sifuentes-Sujo who handled the colors, and Ariana Maher on letters, Psylocke continues to be visually entertaining and really captures the essence of Kwannon as a character.

Overall Grade – 8.7/10
