Emperor Doom
Doctor Doom has been the Sorcerer Supreme for the last six months, but then went to Latveria and lived quietly and in private. Now, he is ready to change the world how he sees fit without anyone to decline his new laws. Doom had a live broadcast where he addressed every person in the world to tell him his new plans, but some are against these new structures. Some are planning an uprising but Doom is already putting his plans into action against those that defy him.
Some unexpected organizations have decided to defy Doom, such as Hydra led by Baron Zemo. Zemo addresses the world with the same broadcast Doom used, and ensures that he will put an end to what he calls a laughable idea, Doom being an emperor. Zemo says he is at the edge of Latveria and plans to end this ridiculous charade once and for all.
All of this is being watched by the Avengers, along with other heroes such as The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Squirrel Girl, and a few others. All of our favorite heroes have come together to form a plan about what to do about Doom, as they feel Doom being emperor cannot stand. They decide to follow Zemo’s lead and head to Latveria on Sue Storm’s invisible plane. With no real plan established, they have no idea what they’ll be greeted with.
Once they arrive, they’re greeted with a new world wide broadcast, this time an extremely surprising one. A broadcast that makes you question what really is happening here? And what can our favorite heroes do about it?
The Writing
While reading One World Under Doom #1, I was hooked into the story from beginning to end. Ryan North sets the tone immediately with Doom’s powerful world wide broadcast, explaining what changes he’s implementing and that same energy is felt throughout the comic. There were some really great moments in One World Under Doom #1, but what I think sticks out to me the most is that North really showed just how cunning and calculated Doom really is. It seems those quiet six months Doom spent in Latveria were spent planning his plan to become Emperor of the World. He has taken every possible situation into consideration, and every hero that could ruin his plans.
The Art
I would say the art of One World Under Doom #1 is just as hard-hitting as the story is. R.B. Silva draws with such an excellent amount of detail, it makes you feel right in the middle of the chaos. Adding in David Curiel on colors and Travis Lanham on letters, there’s really no going wrong here.
One of my favorite aspects of the comic was watching all the heroes team up and seeing how their powers complemented each other. It was exciting to see Sam Wilson and Storm battling together in one panel, and Captain Marvel and the Spider-Men in another—such a great dynamic! But with great heroes, you have to talk about the villains, namely Doom. He looked amazing as both the Sorcerer Supreme and Emperor of the World. It was captivating to see many panels depicting the world’s citizens hanging on every word Doom spoke. All in all, the artists really showcased their talents with One World Under Doom #1! Hats off to the artists!
Overall grade – 10/10
