The Story:
The New Champions and a host of other young heroes continue to fight off an undead Viking army. Meanwhile, behind the scenes a new threat is unveiled!
The Writing:
Steve Foxe does a great job juggling a bunch of characters, especially when so many are new and mostly unknown heroes. At the same time, the story moves, effortlessly from person to person allowing everyone a moment to shine. The sheer amount of heroes that I was meeting for the first time made me concerned at the beginning of this issue. By the end of the issue, however, I had a baseline understanding of, at the very least, the power set and personality of the characters that will be moving forward in this series. On that point, I was also impressed that none of the characters came off as bland or stereotypical “teen” heroes. They had their own voices and motivations that were believable and relatable.
The Art:
Much like the writing in this issue, the art team did a wonderful job with each of these different heroes. The action on display here really elevated the story being told. I had a lot of fun with the creative ways these kids dealt with a horde of Viking zombies. The character designs and powers popped as these bright and colorful kids mowed through enemies without problem.
Overall Grade: 8/10
With another solid outing for this second issue, this creative team continues to keep me interested in where the story is going. As I get older and come to the realization that I am no longer the target demographic for new young heroes, I am delighted to say that this team of New Champions is one I am excited to keep following.
