The Teddy Bear Protocol
After the events that took place in TMNT: The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution #3, the cyber attack and the massive flood attack, April took control and activated the Teddy Bear Protocol. The Teddy Bear Protocol is an escape plan that’s never been tested before, which gets its name from Roosevelt Island, which is where they seek shelter. It seems it was on a need-to-know basis, as Casey and the Turtles had no idea. Understandably so, Casey is frustrated with not knowing, while the Turtles are still trying to wrap their heads around losing their home.
Since this protocol wasn’t tested out or expected to be used, April has a lot to do to get this safe haven up and running for the members of the Resistance. Something April is worrying about is that a lot of the Resistance members haven’t shown up to Roosevelt Island. Another thing to worry about is that Zayton has found a suspicious anomaly that he believes requires all of their attention. There’s a lot to get done and this seems like a job for the Turtles and Casey, so Casey makes a plan to handle all of this in one fell swoop.
Meanwhile, Carterton has called for a temporary truce between the Midtown Mafia and the Chelsea Cartel because he plans didn’t pan out the way he hoped.
The Writing
Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz set the tone immediately with the excitement of the attacks and the aftermath of them. While there is the feeling of despair from the Turtles, I think the writers also did a great job in showing that these Turtles really are kids who can’t wrap their heads around all that’s happened. With losing everything they’ve had and trying to comprehend that they won’t be going back home, I think this sets them up to really embrace their hero roles they have to play.
Alongside all the negative feelings coming from the characters, something I really loved was the trip down memory lane from April. Seeing a flashback of her and Michelangelo with his brothers really added an entirely different tone.
The Art
The level of detail put into each character is truly remarkable, as you don’t want to take your eyes off of each panel. The contrast between the dark and bright colors perfectly matches the tone of the story. And I can’t forget to mention Yi’s electric blue powers—those were a visual treat!
I’d have to say my favorite part the artists did was April’s flashback to a simpler time with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I loved how the artists creatively showed so many different times in one page, without making it feel messy.
