“The Outliers, still finding their place in the mutant world, are hunted by a lethal new set of foes: A bloodthirsty, relentless and unstoppable pack of stealth Sentinels! Cut off from their mentors and allies, with no knowledge of who built or aimed these deadly drones, four untrained mutants are on the run and completely unprepared for the violent hunters making them their prey!”
The Story
After the raid of Greymalkin, the Louisiana X-Men team is back and it’s time to start training for the Outliers. Rogue, being the X-cellent leader she is, has come up with a plan for the young mutants. She proposes that each Outlier gets assigned to an X-Men, so they can be mentored and trained. The Outliers have already been thrown into battle twice, and they need to learn how to be able to fight, defend themselves, and have control over their powers.
Meanwhile, there’s a new threat that’s hitting the streets by the hand of Trask. If the Sentinels weren’t already a problem for the mutants, the new threat is even more of a problem. Trask has put together a new team of Sentinels, but this time they have four legs and a tail. They’re blood thirsty, loyal to the death, and extremely dangerous. While these new Sentinels aren’t quite ready to be released, the Outliers might be the first ones to test out whether or not they’re a worthy adversary for mutants everywhere.
The Writing
The Uncanny X-Men #9 has so much going on in the story, but it all flows perfectly well. Gail Simone does a masterful job at giving each outlier their own spotlight, while giving the X-Men their own voices. I really love the idea of each Outlier getting their own X-Men mentor, and I think the matches Rogue came up with are perfect. I’m really excited to see how each young mutant learns from the X-Men team members, and how the older mutants teach them to become X-Men themselves.
The Art
The amount of detail that Andrei Bressan puts into each panel is mindblowing. You can see exactly how each character is feeling, all the way down to the worry the Outliers feel for their fellow mutants. This juxtaposing the fantastic use of colors by Matthew Wilson, each page is hard to take your eyes away from. Clayton Cowles, as usual, makes each word pack a punch, and sets the tone of each page.
Final Thoughts
Gail Simone has, yet again, given us a solid Uncanny X-Men comic book. I was really curious what would happen after the Raid of Greymalkin and I love that there’s a focus on teaching the kids as if they’re back at the X-Mansion
