The Story:
Well, this is absolutely one way to wrap up your initial arc. DWJ showcases why he is on a tier of his own as he gives us explosive action, desperate moments, and a shocking final death scene all in one. Brio may be my favorite character of this entire tale and we could only hope to have a friend as real as Brio. His final words aren’t one of fright but, that he is a toad. It was a shocking and heartfelt sad death.
As the issue wraps up we get betrayal leaving our heroes in despair. It is not easy to hit these beats but they do. All is not lost and I love it when a story offers a glimmer of hope and the future but, I was not expecting the help that arrives for Sam and Duncan.
The Art:
Riley, Daniel, and Mike bring the heat. The action sequences are gritty and textured as explosions are going off all around the panels. The colors and bursts leave a smoky smell in our minds and the creatures conjured up continue to be insanely crafted. How they come up with these ideas is beyond me and blows my mind. Every time we think we have seen just about every creature from the depths of Hell, Riley, Daniel, and Mike surprise us.
Shawn compliments the artwork as the sounds and explosions come to life with screeches and booms all around our characters. The evil that oozes from the Cascades mouth is lettered like poisonous gas emitting from the panels.
Final Thoughts:
The Moon Is Following Us #5 ends the first arc in a shocking fashion. Our heroes are left with little hope after suffering betrayal and defeat at the hands of someone they thought was a friend. It brings the sad death of a favorite character and gives us a path to saving Penny. I need issue #6 RIGHT NOW!!!
