An Untold Story

“JOURNEY INTO THE LOST WORLD WITH ROGUE, MAGNETO, KA-ZAR AND MORE! The X-Man called Rogue has always been a survivor, but without her mutant powers, she’ll need to prove it like never before! As the Savage Land turns toward war, Rogue will need all her skills to survive dinosaurs, mutates and the Master of Magnetism himself! Writer Tim Seeley (LOCAL MAN) and new artist sensation Zulema Scotto Lavina tell a lost story of a lost world!”

Rogue: The Savage Land #1 is a callback to when Rogue took one for the team and forced her, and the threat her and her team were fighting into the Siege Perilous(Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 269). As she was being chased by a mind-controlled Ms. Marvel, she to used her powers and borrowed from Gateway, and emerged in the Savage Lands. Having to learn how to survive on her own, in a wild jungle with unexpecting threats, Rogue finally finds herself with another human, and a familiar one at that.

Magneto is getting the full story from Rogue and learning how she ended up in the Savage Land, and we see him give Rogue his story as well. According to Magneto, he doesn’t want to be apart of Charles Xavier’s dream, or really be apart of it in any way. It seems he’s come to the Savage Land for solitude, but didn’t expect to see anyone else, or have to deal with these new threats that Rogue speaks of.

Rogue and Magneto’s reunion is interrupted by Zabu, the pet of Ka-Zar, the Lord of the Savage Land. From what Rogue and Magneto can gather from Zabu, Ka-Zar is in trouble and it could be due to those threatening creatures Rogue encountered.

The Writing

I find this untold story from the 90s to be a really fascinating idea, and opens the doors for so many more of these to fill in the gaps of past comics. Tim Seeley does a great job at keeping the story fresh while taking you back to when you first read these earlier Uncanny X-Men comics. I really love the inclusion of Zabu and Ka-Zar, as who can really have enough of them?

The nostalgia factor is what lead to to check out Rogue: The Savage Land #1, and I’m really glad I did. Seeley offers a whole new perspective at the relationship of Rogue and Magneto that started in the Savage Land.

The Art

Zulema Scotto Lavina and Rachelle Rosenberg really showcased their talents all throughout Rogue: The Savage Land #1 in the best way. The juxtaposition of an incredible amount of detail and Rosenbergs use of a gorgeous vast variation of colors makes the comic into a stunning piece of art. Lavina and Rosenberg immediately set the tone with showing Rogue going through the Siege Perilous and they keep that energy high and vibrant throughout the comic. Personally, I think the artwork itself deserves a 10 out of 10.

Final Thoughts

I really didn’t know how I’d feel about an untold story told about a comic from so long ago, but I’d say Tom Seeley and the rest of the team nailed it. I look forward to seeing what’s next!

Overall Grade: 9/10
