The Writing:
While I feel like Spencer Ackerman is crafting a story that I can get behind, this issue felt like a bit of a chore to get through. The story was confusing with a strange pacing that left me, more than a little, disappointed. However, while the first 2/3 of the book suffered, the final act ramped up and won me over in the end. A deep cut Avengers character showing up towards the end of the issue really helped get me back on board and interested as Tony was taken back to a certain “demon” from his past.
The Art:
The art team, as a whole, did a fine job here. While I still don’t like the character design for Tony in this series, everything else was great! The new armor looks fantastic, especially the final page, I can’t wait to see the payoff of that moment! The “demon” I referred to earlier was very well done with a shift in art style that was fitting for the scene. The cover is one of my favorite Iron Man covers in some time as well. Excellent work put in by this art team all around.
The Verdict: 6.5/10
While I’m interested in where this story will go, the odd pacing and uneven storytelling left me unimpressed with this issue as a whole. The promise of more to come and the art are what will keep me coming back to this title. I have no doubt that this series will pick up soon but for now this was a lackluster entry in the Iron Man mythology.
