This new comic run follows Emmeline Heron. She seems to be a tough-as-nails woman who wants to attend the Carlyle School. This entire issue of this comic reminds me greatly of  Mulan. Having the girl wanting to fight, and she is underestimated, but with Emmeline it is very different.  Emmeline’s journey seems to her wanting to become a leader.  Actually,  she wants to be a King. I thought it was great that this girl, wants to be King and she is confident. Throughout this first issue, she is tested with many tests to see where her skills are. Emmeline seems to have some trouble with some of them, but most she is able to complete. It also gives a quick backstory, of where she came from, before entering the school.

Emmeline has a chance to fight, and it seems that she also is skilled in swords. I really love this girl power aspect going on. By the end of the issue, someone arrives that wants to challenge Emmeline. This person thinks that he will be a great king. Emmeline will have to figure out how to get on top. I believe she has the power to make sure that the person who is challenging her, does not become King.a

I really like the story, and that it follows one singular character. Many of the independent comics want to follow multiple people, and that’s not good. I like just focusing on Emmeline’s journey alone, and see her ability to become a leader. I also like the fighting scenes. It is not too gory, where this issue is extremely violent. It has the perfect balance of portraying the violence. I’m really excited to see how Emmeline ends up next to the person challenging her.

The art is amazing, it has vibrant colors in each panel. It seems that the art style is also a bit different. I like the shading, and also each character that Emmeline is talking to, has their own unique look. Emmeline did have longer hair, but, she cut it. There was a flashback with her sisters, and all of them had longer blonde hair.

I give this a 7.5/10
