Coming off of another equivalent series of Firefly, this introduces a brand new character. Malcolm Reynolds can’t seem to not get in trouble. Malcolm is running with a wrong crowd, and it ends up with him joining an army. Malcolm’s army is from “The Planet Shadow” which has a lot of desert like surroundings. After Malcolm gets in trouble, he pledges to fight for the Brown coats. He is miserable during this time, but he ends up being the captain of his team. As team leader, he has to make different sacrifices and choices on behalf of his team. I really enjoy that Malcolm really leans into being a leader. Reading the comic panel, you can see his personal growth immediately. There is also some moments throughout the comic where Malcolm is dealing with spaceships. Malcolm is skilled with using guns, and taking cover when they are under attack. He has no superpowers, but he is very strategic on making his next moves.
There are several action sequences, that make it interesting to immerse yourself in the Firefly word. The artist that created the comic panels, make sure to pay attention to show the different sounds that the ‘booms’ and explosions have right on the page. I also like that you can see the different planets, that Malcolm ends up on. There is a jungle-like setting, and then there are desert-like settings. Each of them are distinct, and the colors pop right off the page.
At the end, we find Malcolm trying to move on from the Brown coats, and he sets off on his own quest. I hope to see exactly what he will be up to, in the next issue. I believe that Malcolm will do well on his own. I just don’t know what Malcolm will face, as far as creatures on other planets, or if he will join another team. Only the next issue will answer my questions.
I give this a 7.5/10.
