DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE: An Adrenaline Filled Joyride

Deadpool & Wolverine is finally out and I am compelled to share my honest opinion about the latest installment in the Fox..er, I mean Marvel Cinematic Universe. There will be no spoilers in this article.

The End of the Fox X-Men Franchise

Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) entering the MCU is no small feat, rather, it requires making sense of the long time parallel Marvel universes between 20th Century Studios (Formerly Fox) and Marvel Studios. Loki Season 1, explains the premise of there being one sacred timeline. With the conclusion of Loki Season 2, we discover that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) himself has given the branch timelines a chance to continue existing. Deadpool throws the Fox universe into this situation rather well, though there is a tad bit of exposition… and they will let you know it. Deadpool is on a mission, but his way. What this movie does best is actually give a great bookend to the Fox universe, as respectfully as Deadpool is capable of.

All the Jokes and References Hit…for MARVEL Fans

This film is cameo and reference heavy, between locations, vehicles, and characters you will need to watch this film multiple times to catch it all. It plays fan service to the comic fans, the Fox X-Men movie fans, the MCU fans, and the Marvel fans that keep up with all the gossip, rumors, and leaks from the past. It is inevitable that the casual fan might be amused by some parts of the movie, while the hardcore fan sitting next to them is simultaneously going absolutely nuts. Don’t worry, just bring a nerdy friend with you and they can fill you in on everything you miss.

Bringing Back a Beloved Character

Hugh Jackman returning to reprise his role as Logan (AKA Wolverine, Weapon X) is absolutely delightful and the chemistry between him and Ryan Reynolds is hands down a better match than we saw between Deadpool and Cable in Deadpool 2. The successfully satisfying interaction between the two is only possible because of the friendship they both share. Wolverine’s backstory in this film is unlike anything we have seen before but is completely on point of how we know the X-Man.

Cameos A Plenty!

This film dives deep into the vast resource of Marvel Movies from the past, and some films that never happened. The dialogue is filled with references and fourth wall breaks from more than just Deadpool, but they appear to be completely unaware that they are doing it. Many of these characters have a great chance to jab at or revel in their past roles and films.

Overall Thoughts

This film is hoped to bring the X-Men into the sacred timeline, and provide a jump start to the MCU that many have voiced is greatly needed, but does it do all of that? I cannot definitively answer that, time will tell (TVA pun intended) but what I do know, is that Deadpool & Wolverine is an adrenaline filled joyride with huge cameos that scratch so many Marvel filled itches, that it takes place as one of my top 3 favorite MCU films.
