The world of the Children of the Atom begins anew! With a brand new team comes brand new challenges. How does this squad fare with Magneto overseeing the action?
X-MEN #1 (2024) by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles ushers in a new stat quo for the legendary Marvel team of Mutants.
Let’s see how the latest installments sets the pace.

First and foremost, this issue is VERY new reader friendly. The opening page is a quick synopsis featuring the team line-up. This version of the squad is comprised of Cyclops, Beast, Psylocke, Kid Omega, Temper, Magik, Juggernaut and Magneto. There is also an “X-Mentions” section that is very useful to keep track of future events.
KRAKOA’S FINAL STAND
One point readers need to keep in mind with this series is it’s a return to superhero basics. The themes of Krakoa are not present here. MacKay pens a reminder of the classic tropes of the heroic age. Fans looking for some semblance of “X-Men ‘97” will find points to enjoy with this chapter.
An element that jumps off the pages is the playful disfunction of the team. The pairing of Juggernaut and Magik steals panels. Kid Omega is another that will have fans smirking with the dialogue he spouts. It’s a more light-hearted feel even with the dire times at hand.
The conflicts are very opposite in this chapter. One is more traditional in “Fourth School”. The other is the human/mutant relations in Krakoa’s wake. Magneto and Beast have standout moments concerning this area. It ultimately circles back to a familiar landing spot. The future is still anchored by the past. The closing page re-enforces the X-Men stance, albeit with more punch than previous showings. Welcome to a new era indeed.
X-MEN IN THE BLOOD HUNT!
Stegman and the art team give the X-Men plenty of heroic action panels in this debut. The two page spread heading into action kicks events off in a great manner. Seeing the difference in focus between Omega and Cyclops demonstrates the clash in styles. A full page panel entrance into the fray will have readers amped for what’s next. This energy carries strongly into the mission at hand. It’s classic X-Men 101.
Contrasting this is the Beast images. Dealing with the local authorities brings out a variety of emotion in Mr. McCoy. Readers see a range of playfulness to lamenting about Krakoan times. It builds for the adjustment to the new stat quo. This gets amplified with Magneto’s half panel entrance. Even in the new space, old habits die hard. it justifies the final image of the chapter. Readers will have to see if time will heal all wounds.

A return to basics floods the pages of the latest X-Men series debut. MacKay’s writing takes readers on a vintage journey into the more heroic nature of the squad. Stegman, Mayer Gracia and Cowles balance the big action with more reflective images. All together, it starts off the latest phase of mutant history with some new looks on the original Xavier blueprint.
