Creative Team: Mat Groom (Writing), Tommaso Bianchi  (Artist) Andrew Dalhouse (Colors), Joe Sabino (Letters)

The Writing:

Mat Groom’s writing immediately captures the reader’s attention with the confusion and humor from an alien species poking fun at Terrax. This sets a lighthearted tone, promising readers an enjoyable experience. The nostalgic feel of Terrax being the butt of jokes and constantly a step behind the Silver Surfer is delightful, reminiscent of old-school comics.

The theming and messaging are strong, with the Silver Surfer’s attempts to teach Terrax and Terrax’s stubborn refusal. The writing flows seamlessly, bringing a smile to your face during key moments between Terrax and the Silver Surfer.

The Art, Colors and Layouts:

Tommaso Bianchi’s art, combined with Andrew Dalhouse’s colors and Joe Sabino’s lettering, brings the story to life. The action sequences are dynamic, with blurring and shading techniques conveying motion and power, particularly with Terrax. These moments become even more humorous when Terrax is easily deceived by the Silver Surfer. The close-up panels detail raw emotions—Terrax’s anger and frustration contrasted with the Silver Surfer’s calm and calculated demeanor.

The wavy, blue-bordered speech bubbles for Terrax effectively communicate his deep frustration and anger, adding to the narrative’s emotional depth. The holographic teleportation panel is a standout, showcasing a magician-style reveal that is both visually stunning and well-executed in terms of art and color.

Final Thoughts:

Giant Sized Silver Surfer #1 is a must-read for fans, offering a perfect blend of humor, nostalgia, and compelling storytelling. The creative team delivers an issue that not only entertains but also captures the essence of classic comic book adventures.

Overall Grade 8.5 out of 10
