Dracula #4:

The stunning conclusion to the horrifying series has arrived as we see Renfield struggling within himself with what humanity he has left.

Dracula has set his sights on Mina, and it is up to Van Helsing and the Doctor to save his daughter from Dracula’s sharp clutches. Issue #4 delivers us a haunting yet beautiful conclusion to a beloved Universal Monster.

The Art:

Simmonds continues to deliver a symphony of expressive colors as this tale concludes. What stands out to me within this issue is that he does not use too much detail within the faces of each character. Yet, despite this, so much expression is still shown on every panel.

You can feel Renfield’s anguish; the warmth of Dracula’s hate and anger floods our eyes down to our toes. It is complimentary artwork to the poetic tale that is being told. HE has certainly saved his best work for last and offers us a visually stunning conclusion.

The Writing:

James opens this book from Renfield’s point of view, draws us into the story, and makes us feel sympathy for the creature despite all he has done to bring about pain. That is a testament to his powerful writing style. He can take the most worthless and vile husk of a man and make us feel something for him.

Then again, his ability to switch gears and portray through Mina the twisted spell Dracula holds. Even though Dracula merely speaks a line about the entire issue, it holds so much hate and power when spoken. Skybound has assembled the perfect writer for this tale and it shows.

Overall:

Skybound has entered the world of Universal Monsters, delivering a frightening tale of its most beloved monster. The team assembled for this task hit a home run with issue #4 and this entire series. The finale delivers an air of suspense, compassion, and anguish as we see the demise of Dracula and Renfield.

It did not need to rely on action to tell such an incredible story, and that is what I loved most about it. If this is a taste of what is yet to come then I think we are all in for a very incredible treat!

10/10.
