The Rundown:
The book opens up in a cabin in the woods where our mysterious witch(s) have gathered thinking they are safe until a group of men shows up resulting in them being ripped limb from limb.
Issue 2 then picks up immediately where 1 leaves off with Rose being whisked from her house unaware at first that she was the cause of the fire. It befalls her that her mom was still in the fire and she has now passed away. Flash forward and Rose is in an institution where people are whispering behind her back.
She gets a visit from Eliott and the two plan to meet up that night. As night falls the plan goes awry as the sprinklers go off and as Rose plans an escape away from the madness her imaginary or not-so-imaginary elephant Wallace appears flaunting a bow and arrow. Wallace assists Rose in breaking out and the two run into Elliott leaving us and the two wondering if Wallace is real or not.
The Art:
Robert Quinn provides a sense of realism with the art in this book. The way his characters appear in the foreground almost in 3D popping out from the page mixed in with a mix of dark and light colors works to please the eyes in this issue.
One thing he is not afraid of is getting up close and personal with his shots which adds to the stunning realism seen from page to page. My favorite character is Wallace our small yet mighty purple elephant friend who sells this comic alone.
The Writing:
Ethan and Griffin do a great job starting us off with heavy moments such as bodies being ripped apart which provides key backstory before they dive into an almost Alice in Wonderland story.
They truly keep you guessing as to whether or not Rose’s world is real or not which sucks you deeper into the story as you are left guessing.
How do we feel?
Kill Your Darlings is a story not to be slept on. It’s an original tale of magic, wonder, and horror all blended into one twist and turn after another. There are only two issues but, it’s both fun and haunting in the tragic story they tell with Rose.
There is more than meets the eye and I can’t wait to see how a witch trial impacts our characters. If for no other reason, a tiny purple elephant playing Robin Hood should make you immediately grab this book.
