In recent months, DC Comics have been flying off the shelves, and some credit for this goes to James Gunn.
In October 2022, Gunn, along with Peter Safran, were announced as Co-CEO of DC Studios.
In January of 2023, Gunn revealed the first chapter of some of his and Safran’s planning. A few days after that announcement, Gunn released a list of five DC comics from which upcoming projects would draw inspiration.
The books listed were “All-Star Superman” by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, “Swamp Thing” by Alan Moore, “Batman” by Grant Morrison, and “The Authority” by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch.

Soon after this announcement, the sales of DC comics began to skyrocket. Jim Lee, the current CEO of DC Comics, expressed his enthusiasm to The Hollywood Reporter.
“It’s amazing to have partners in Peter and James, particularly James. He was a comics fan growing up and knows our mythology inside out. Having that kind of ally … allows us to really leverage what he is doing and allow us to market and sell comic books to new readers,” says Lee.
However, Gunn’s recommendations did not end there.
On August 15, 2023, Gunn went to social media to endorse the DC comic “Wonder Woman: Historia,” written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and illustrated by Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott. Impressively, within a mere 24 hours, this comic rose from the 63rd rank to secure the premier position among DC comics on Amazon’s sales chart.
Through a single action, James Gunn succeeded in raising enthusiasm amongst fans for DC movies like never before. By recommending comics, Gunn created a good starting point for casual comic readers, gave fans a better idea regarding the projects they’re about, and raised comic book sales keeping local shops in business.
