Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the 69th issue of The Amazing Spider-Man from Joe Kelly & Marvel Comics!
Joe Kelly is back writing the story, and it’s a heavy issue this week reeling from the last issue and the death of Peter Parker. So just where do things go from there? Let’s jump into it!
The Amazing Spider-Man #69 by Joe Kelly (Writer), Ed McGuinness (Penciler), Mark Farmer (Inker), Marcio Menyz (Colorist), VC’s Joe Caramagna (Letterer), Ed McGuiness & Cliff Rathburn & Marcio Menyz (Cover Art) is a very solid issue and a good follow-up to the previous issue. And the ending is one that is sure to have fans talking.
This issue picks up right where the last one left off, and that’s with Spider-Man dead! Callix is celebrating & his sister Cyra is all of a sudden having second thoughts. The issue does a fantastic job at showing how chaotic things have gotten, and perhaps how foolish it was to put all of this on Peter’s shoulders.
The standout moments of the story are Strange “confronting” Doom and laying the blame for all of this at his feet, and the sequence between Cyra and Phil Coulson. The later is a touching moment that weaves it’s way throughout the issue before ending in quite possibly the most surprising interesting ending I’ve read in some time.
I will fully admit I figured it was going to happen, but just not this soon. And I also did not expect it to look like THAT. I won’t spoil it for you, but let’s just say you’re going to be surprised. I’m interested to see where they go with it cause there are some interesting possibilities they could do.
The artwork is, as always, top notch. And my favorite sequence is towards the end of the issue. I won’t spoil it, but it was great to see it done in the way it was with Cyra & Coulson. It felt like the ending to an episode of you’re favorite tv show/anime and it gave me the feeling of “I need to see what happens next!”
FINAL POINT: The issue is a great read from start to finish, and one that I think all fans will enjoy. It sets up very interestingly for the next issue in what’s sure to be a gargantuan battle of epic proportions. A very solid story, mixed with top notch artwork make this an issue you’re going to want to pick up at the shops this week!
Overall Grade: 8/10
