PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW
Story Breakdown (spoilers ahead)
We pick up right where issue 31 left us with a showdown between Erica Slaughter and Cecilia. The story starts off tense and then transitions into almost a heartfelt moment where Cecilia and Erica head inside after Erica decides not to shoot her to share a drink and a toast to Gary.
The two share an obvious disdain yet almost a mutual respect over the past year as Cecilia goes into how both she and Gary shared love for Jessica, a love that Cecilia was not capable of reaching quite like Gary.
After their Toast, Cecilia goes into how she wanted Erica dead and now that Cutter is on the loose in a manic rage, she feels responsible to a degree. Cecilia amidst her disdain for Erica tells her that she is the best. She has a choice to either kill Cutter or bring her in to properly train her once more and take Jessica’s empty seat on the council.
MORE FROM BOOM! STUDIOS
The choice is Erica’s although if it were up to Cecilia Cutter would die the most painful death imaginable. Cecilia then reveals she is leaving poison that will both kill the Duplicitypes and Cutter in a slow and brutal fashion.
The choice is Erica’s as Cecilia leaves warning Erica to never cross her path again. We then go into a heartwarming flashback of Gary and Erica interacting as Erica is left crying after the interaction.
How do we feel?
There is a reason why Tynion won an Eisner for the work he is doing on this series. In this issue, he does an amazing job of creating tension and holding it throughout the issue while also bringing you feelings of sympathy for these characters.
Meanwhile, Dell’edera and Muerto do a wonderful job of complimenting the tension through their art. The way they create raw emotions that jump out at you from each page and mix in lighter and darker colors to invoke these emotions is nothing short of beautiful.
THE ENDFIELD GANG MASSACRE!
This issue does a wonderful job of setting the stage for what is sure to be a brutal showdown between Erica and Cutter. Mixing in the emotional flashback sequence where we see that Gary cared for Erica and understood where she was coming from was a genius addition to the tense build-up we have seen over the last few issues.
Boom! Studios continue their rise to comic book glory in this latest issue and if this is not on your pull list it is not too late to catch up.
