The Art:
Roberts and Stewart do a great job painting the picture within the luscious forest and building suspense throughout the artwork. The vibrant greens and dark shadows tell a story on their own, which enhances this first issue.
WANT MORE UNIVERSAL MONSTERS?
I enjoyed how the emotions were conveyed throughout our characters as well the way each one was drawn distinctively. It gave them a personality that, without the writing, you could connect to. I often found myself getting lost in a good way as I scanned every panel for hidden easter eggs or taking in the scenery.
The Writing:
Ram and Dan enhance this story by creating a suspenseful and cinematic story. The character motivations are clearly defined, making sure our story is clear. Marsden is written as a strong character, which sets her up as our antagonist.
It slowly builds up our suspense and eagerness to discover the cause of the deaths in town. The dialogue itself is not written cheaply either, and I found it to be as immersive as the artwork it is backed up by.
Overall:
This is a strong entry issue as we expand our Universal Monsters universe. The artwork and writing go hand in hand, and they craft a cinematic experience within the pages. They did a great job not giving us too much in the first issue. The creators are slowly building up their story which I believe is a strength to the comic. I am very excited to see where this goes. It will be an absolute pull each month!
