Hoppers – Wood You Believe It?

0

If you’re looking for the next great family movie, Hoppers officially joins the ranks of the other great Disney and Pixar animated family films. The film is “cute” in the best way possible. It blends the classic heart Pixar moviegoers have come to expect with a plot that’s a little unhinged in all the right ways.

Highlights

The Voice Talent: The cast is absolutely outstanding in this film. The chemistry between Piper Curda’s Mabel and Jon Hamm’s Mayor Jerry is both hilarious and important. The constant battle of the girl who wants to honor those important to her and a Mayor that views her as a speed bump in the way of progress builds the tension for the movie, as well as provides a few of the more lighthearted moments.

Visually Stunning: As can be expected from the powerhouse of animation that is Disney/Pixar, the animation in Hoppers is stunning. The film stuns in the small details, such as the texture of the “robotic” fur and the larger details, such as the lush outdoor environments. The animation feels fluid and dynamic, with even the smallest of characters, like the ant’s movement, feeling natural and well done.

Easter Eggs: Make sure and keep your eyes peeled. As is the standard for Pixar movies, Hoppers is chocked full of easter eggs. Not only are there nods to other Pixar movies, but little hidden easter eggs in tribute to Disney’s The Haunted Mansion ride among others. There’s still the traditional Pixar nods you’ve come to expect like the Pizza Planet truck but there are others. Some are obvious and some are blink and you miss it moments but they help to force you to focus on the action on the screen.

Final Thoughts

Hoppers is another great family movie from Disney/Pixar that is filled with genuine laughs and enough layers that both kids and adults will stay entertained throughout the movie. I believe my wife and I laughed harder than the kids did. Whether it’s wild animals figuring out text-to-speech functions, tiny crowns, or even Beavers working hard to 1980’s rock anthems, the movie scratches all the right itches. This movie blends the classic animation and heart we have come to expect with a truly unhinged idea of transporting people’s consciousness into a robot. The film manages to feel grounded even when you’re watching animated beavers gnaw on wood. Underneath it all is the ultimate message about being so dedicated to an idea that sometimes you can lose yourself in pursuit of it.

The Feywild Job Releases June 30th From Random House Worlds

Random House Worlds has revealed a brand-new D&D novel.

The Feywild Job Cover (Credit: Random House Worlds)

Author C.L. Polk is writing a new cozy queer romance novel set within the world of D&D’s Feywild. The Feywild Job’s official description reads:

“Saeldian has sworn never to fall in love. That oath isn’t just a personal promise, but rather a magical pact, granting them powerful abilities. The only catch? They must never give their heart away—a deal that Saeldian is perfectly content with. They’ve seen firsthand how messy love can get.

Saeldian prefers their no-strings-attached life as a con artist, pulling off heists and leaving a trail of broken hearts behind them. But when a grift goes horribly wrong, they catch the eye of a mysterious patron with a job offer they can’t refuse.

The mission? Steal a gem called “The Kiss of Enduring Love” and return it to the Feywild. Simple enough, until Saeldian discovers their ex-partner, Kell—a charming bard—is part of the team.

The last time Saeldian saw Kell, things hardly ended on good terms. A kiss became a betrayal, leaving Kell hurt and confused for almost a decade. But Kell can’t just walk away—not when this job might finally be his ticket back to the Feywild.

Forced to work together again, their adventure takes them from high-society parties to Feywild couples’ therapy. But as Saeldian and Kell rekindle their chemistry, they realize the gem is much more than a fey bauble, and their simple heist has summoned powerful enemies. . . .”

This new book sounds amazing, and it definitely seems like it is going to be a wild time. C.L. Polk’s The Feywild Job releases June 30th.

Codenames: Critical Role Adventures Coming Soon

0

The newest Edition of Codenames has been announced.

Earlier this week, Czech Games Edition announced a slew of new board games coming this year. One of which is a new version of Codenames, themed to Critical Role. Codenames: Critical Role Adventures is described as:

Codenames: Critical Role Adventures Box Art By Štěpán Drašťák, David Aghamyan & Dávid Jablonovský (Credit: Czech Games Edition)

“Codenames: Critical Role Adventures is a unique take on Codenames inspired by the Critical Role universe. It reimagines the classic mechanisms players know and love in a fresh, unexpected way, transforming this game into a whole new Codenames experience.

The game is fully cooperative, with one player taking up the mantle of a game master (GM) and giving clues to their party members, leading them through perilous missions toward the final boss. Together, they can journey through three separate campaigns, each consisting of multiple branching missions. Every mission features its own goals, and rules that tweak the standard Codenames gameplay—requiring the GM and their party to adapt and think differently to overcome the challenges at hand.

The party chooses three out of seven iconic Critical Role characters to embark on the adventure. The base game introduces Vex (and Trinket), Percy, Grog, Jester, Nott, Dorian, and Fresh Cut Grass. Players can mix and match these heroes before every new campaign, as different combinations result in distinct gameplay styles.

Playable heroes have their own cardboard miniatures to be placed on the words during guessing. Each hero also comes with personalized abilities that unlock as players collect XP from successful missions, and they can equip items that can be purchased along the way. To track XP, HP, character progression, and items, every character has their own character sheet. And yes, there is a D20 included in the box, as characters must pass their own unique skill checks that determine how well (if at all) their abilities are executed.”

The game box will include:

  • 200 Double-Sided Cards (400 Themed Words)
  • 40 Double-Sided Key Cards
  • 1 GM Screen (Key Card Holder)
  • 8 Cardboard Miniatures (With Plastic Stands)
  • 25 Item Cards
  • 21 Covering Tiles Of Various Colors
  • 1 D20
  • Various Cardboard Tokens (Health, XP, Coins, And More)
  • 7 Different Character Sheets
  • 3 Campaign Maps
  • Campaign Book
  • Rulebook

Alongside the base game, there will also be an expansion releasing at the same time. That expansion’s description reads:

“Add even more Critical Role to your Codenames and explore the adventures of Vox Machina!

Codenames: Critical Role Adventures – Vox Machina Expansion Pack features a set of 42 words themed after the first iconic Critical Role campaign, as well as 2 new items, and a new Vox Machina character that you can use in your Exandria Adventures—Keyleth.”

The items in the expansion include:

  • 42 Themed Words
  • 2 Items
  • 1 Playable Character- Keyleth

Codenames: Critical Role Adventures and the Codenames: Critical Role Adventures- Vox Machina expansion will be available sometime in Q3 2026.

THE GREY #1 – From the Beginning

The Story

Jumping right into The Grey #1, we’re introduced to Shameka Day, a scientist who is doing what she can to make the world a better place. Burning the midnight oil, Shameka has finally created something that she feels is exactly what society needs. What she creates is nothing short of ingenious. What she’s made is a way to create and maintain mini black holes through a glove of her own creation.

Cover art by Tiger Salmon. Published by Midnight Comics

Shameka just wants to help the world and looks forward to all of the good she can do and all the people she can help. However, the people she works for has much more sinister ideas in mind. Shameka being empathetic, kind-hearted, and driven by her need to help, is more than surprised at her superiors wanting to use her tech as a weapon rather than something that can change the game for society.

For Shameka as a character, it’s clear who she is. She’s someone who’s already a hero that the world needs. She created this glove with the betterment of the world as her priority, but the company she works for has already thought of ways to use this creation in ways that never crossed her mind.

The Art

The artwork of The Grey #1 has simpler backgrounds with the characters being the focal point, which I think leaves room for the story to speak for itself. What I really appreciated was while Shameka is very detailed, when she uses her invention, there’s a beautiful aura of golden light that highlights the true power of what she’s created. Along with that, the emotions of the story are shown clearly through the characters. Whether it be Shameka’s exhaustion, or her superiors sinister plans, it’s easy to see what the story is portraying.

Final Thoughts

Shameka Day is the hero we need in the world, and The Grey #1 perfectly shows why she’s the hero we need. Her heart is in the right place, her intentions are clear, and her drive is unmatched. This was an excellent origin story of a genius Black woman who’s on her way to become a superhero, despite being surrounded by the world’s toxicity.

Overall Grade – 9/10

New Bishop Solo Series Coming This Summer From Marvel Comics

The energy-absorbing powerhouse X-Man is back with a new solo series this summer.

Marvel has announced that the powerhouse Ms. Marvel writer, Saladin Ahmed, is writing the new Bishop solo series. Alongside him, Mario Santoro, who is doing the art on Storm, is also doing the art on this.

Bishop #1 Cover A By Davide Paratore (Credit: Marvel Comics)

This series will have Bishop and his sister, Shard, teaming up to take on a new group of enemies called the Final Brotherhood. The book’s full description reads:

“The Time-Lost X-Man Is Back!

Bishop has always lived by a strict code. But that code will get called into question when his sister, Shard, is sent to the present right before she died! Will Bishop adhere to his principles and protect the timestream? Or will he risk it all to save the most important person in his life?”

Saladin Ahmed had this to say about the new series:

“I’m having a blast doing a deep dive into the dark corners of Lucas Bishop’s time-travel traumatized mind! I’m a writer who loves both family drama and spectacle, so getting to juxtapose the big visual comic book elements of temporal warping and explosive powers with the quiet pain and joy of sibling relationships is my happy place.”

Mario Santoro also had this to say about the new series:

“When I drew issues of Storm (2024), I also had the pleasure of drawing Bishop, and I really enjoyed doing it. I never imagined that I would get a chance to draw an incredible solo adventure for the character. I have always loved the X-Men, and I’m thrilled every time I get to work with one of them. I’m also excited to work with a fantastic team led by [Editor] Darren Shan and alongside Saladin Ahmed, who wrote an incredible story for Lucas.”

This new series launches on June 10th.

THELBE JACK: SEEDS OF RUIN #1 – The New Life

Creative Team – Frank Goodie, Slobodan Jovanović, Noise Art

Published by AshVeil Comics

MORE FROM NERD INITIATIVE HERE!

The Story

Jumping right into the story, we’re placed into a recurring nightmare that our main character experiences time and time again. It’s the story of when everything changed, when he went from being Frederic Atrecious, a child who had to kill his own brother after seeing his mother slain by the Sun Army and his abusive father sentenced to death, to Thelbe Jack. Thelbe Jack is a magic-wielding thief who’s constantly on the run.

Cover art by Noise Art. Published by AshVeil Comics.

Thelbe is currently on a mission to find an ancient relic called Vellanor’s Grief. The dark and magical relic is tied to death and misery, and everyone that owns the relic ends up dying. Thelbe isn’t the only person looking for the relic, as the Sun Army has been searching for it as well. With the Sun Army right on his tail, Thelbe makes a run for it. He thinks he’s finally lost the violent soldiers, but what he doesn’t know is that he’s still being watched by a mysterious visitor.

The Writing

Thelbe Jack: Seeds of Ruin #1 sets the tone immediately in the story, and the energy continues to soar throughout the comic. Compelling from the very beginning, the story brings so much world-building as well as a lot of mystery to the pages. Frank Goodie does a fantastic job at keeping you locked in and making you want to read more and more of this new world.

Thelbe Jack is a character that’s shrouded in his own trauma, and uses that to his advantage. As compelling as the story is, Thelbe is the driving force that makes you want to know more about his world. From the violent Sun Army to Thelbe’s past life, there’s so many places Frank Goodie could go with this story and I look forward to seeing where he takes it!

The Art

The artwork of Thelbe Jack: Seeds of Ruin #1 is as inviting as the story itself. Matching the tones perfectly, Slobodan Jovanović does a fantastic job at delivering raw and emotional artwork. Each panel is heavily detailed and leaves no stone unturned in terms of understanding the tones. Jovanović makes each page a black and white work of art that brings even more depth to the story of Thelbe Jack. While each page is black and white, the artist ventures out and uses bright red blood as a focal point on some pages, which makes the reader fully understand the magnitude of the situation. All in all, the artist brought this compelling story to life in a brilliant way.

Final Thoughts

The story captures your attention immediately and doesn’t let go until the very end, when you’re wanting to read more and more. This was a fantastic job by Frank Goodie!

Overall Grade – 9.2/10
