The Story

Jumping right into The Grey #1, we’re introduced to Shameka Day, a scientist who is doing what she can to make the world a better place. Burning the midnight oil, Shameka has finally created something that she feels is exactly what society needs. What she creates is nothing short of ingenious. What she’s made is a way to create and maintain mini black holes through a glove of her own creation.

Shameka just wants to help the world and looks forward to all of the good she can do and all the people she can help. However, the people she works for has much more sinister ideas in mind. Shameka being empathetic, kind-hearted, and driven by her need to help, is more than surprised at her superiors wanting to use her tech as a weapon rather than something that can change the game for society.

For Shameka as a character, it’s clear who she is. She’s someone who’s already a hero that the world needs. She created this glove with the betterment of the world as her priority, but the company she works for has already thought of ways to use this creation in ways that never crossed her mind.

The Art

The artwork of The Grey #1 has simpler backgrounds with the characters being the focal point, which I think leaves room for the story to speak for itself. What I really appreciated was while Shameka is very detailed, when she uses her invention, there’s a beautiful aura of golden light that highlights the true power of what she’s created. Along with that, the emotions of the story are shown clearly through the characters. Whether it be Shameka’s exhaustion, or her superiors sinister plans, it’s easy to see what the story is portraying.

Final Thoughts

Shameka Day is the hero we need in the world, and The Grey #1 perfectly shows why she’s the hero we need. Her heart is in the right place, her intentions are clear, and her drive is unmatched. This was an excellent origin story of a genius Black woman who’s on her way to become a superhero, despite being surrounded by the world’s toxicity.

Overall Grade – 9/10
