EUPHORIA SEASON 3 EPISODE 5 – “This Little Piggy”

Catch the new episodes of Euphoria on HBO Max on Sundays at 9pm est!

Catch up with Euphoria season 2, episode 4 here!

This is a recap, so spoilers ahead!

Into the fifth episode

In the fifth episode, we start with Cassie, who has fit 50k followers and is doing whatever she can to make some money. Selling her underwear, whispering the client’s names into a mic, even getting her feet involved. It’s whatever the customer wants. You can clearly see that this is all weighing on her and with Maddy acting as her pimp of sorts, she’s nowhere near stopping. Especially with Nate at home encouraging his wife to do all these outlandish things for money.

Once the audience sees just how much Cassie is doing to remain on top, we’re then shown a bazaar “Cassiezilla” skit that leaves you scratching your head. But hey, if you were ever interested to see what Cassie’s breasts look like up close, then this is for you, I suppose.

Euphoria, season 3, episode 5. HBO Max

Cassie finds out that Maddy isn’t an official manager, and more of an assistant to the manager, and she’s starting to think that she needs to cut her loose. When she finds this out, she’s offered to join Brandon’s TikTok team. So now, she has even more incentive to break ties with Maddy.

Rue

Rue feels like she is being looked at sideways by everyone on Alamo’s team. This is a huge problem since Rue is now playing a double agent for the feds. Maybe it’s Rue’s imagination, but the vibes certainly have changed ever since the robbery. Alamo is planning to get his revenge on Laurie. This seems like it’ll be a never-ending cycle between the two kingpins until one of them dies.

In this episode, we get to see how truly unhinged Alamo is, and unfortunately, so does Rue.

Cassie tries to move on

Cassie requests a meeting with Maddy to discuss her huge opportunity with the biggest TikTok house of all L.A., and the awkwardness in the air is obvious. Cassie doesn’t want to hurt Maddy’s feelings by dumping her, but Maddy has a few tricks up her sleeves to make sure that doesn’t happen. That includes a fake phone call canceling an audition for Cassie, which Cassie falls for quickly. Making Cassie sign a contract, with photo proof of her signing it, Maddy now has Cassie exactly where she wants her.

The funny thing is that Maddy never actually had an audition for Cassie planned, so she had to pull a few strings and get Lexie involved.

When the audition does happen, Cassie portrays a scene from Antony and Cleopatra. While the team goes over Cassie’s audition tape, Lexie walks in and finds out that Cassie said Lexie recommended her for the part, which is a problem because Lexie absolutely did not.

Rue and Jules

It’s been some time since we saw Rue and Jules just hanging out, but this turns into something a lot more. Asking Rue about her past relationships, Jules definitely makes the hang out a lot more awkward than it should be. Constantly asking “do you want to kiss me”, Jules clearly has ulterior motives, not that Rue takes any issue with it. This leads to an off-screen sex escapade between the two, and all in the comfort of Jules’ sugar daddy’s home. Speaking of the sugar daddy, Ellis, he finds Rue’s clothes and accuses Jules of having guys over at his apartment. Ellis isn’t pleased in the slightest, and tells Jules that he cares more about his family than anything else, so he can’t come home with an STD.

Euphoria, season 3, episode 5. HBO Max

Again with the toe

Nate gets a notification that Cassie has wired him the money he needs, but that doesn’t change the fact that he missed a payment with Naz. While Nate is celebrating the wire transfer, he doesn’t see the hitman walk up behind him into his house. Knowing exactly what’s about to happen, he runs. But as every TV character does, he runs upstairs for some reason, where there’s nowhere to go. Getting the breaks beat off of him, Nate is on the floor when the man goes for his reattached toe. Pretty sure there’s no fixing it once it’s removed for a second time. But to add a little razzle dazzle to this beating, the man goes for his finger too. So basically, as the season progresses, Nate loses a body part. In the last episode, we saw his crash out in front of the council, but this is definitely much worse.

Euphoria, season 3, episode 5. HBO Max

Alamo is on to Rue

Alamo isn’t pleased about the robbing that happened in the last episode that got someone shot, but what he didn’t know is that it all started with Rue being accused of being a rat. Rue completely forgot that she framed Magick for being a drug user by putting drugs in her locker, and Magick found it. Bringing it to Alamo’s attention, she says that Rue is framing her, which gets the gears turning in Alamo’s head. Alamo knows that Rue once worked with the robbers, as they were Lauries crew. But Rue also said that she didn’t recognize the voices, which makes it look like she was protecting her. So, Alamo takes matters in his own hands.

Euphoria, season 3, episode 5. HBO Max

Maddy’s new business partner

Maddy and Rue are hanging out at a local diner when Alamo makes an appearance. He interrupts the women and takes a seat. Getting to know Maddy even better, who isn’t intimidated by him in the least, he answers a phone call. The person on the phone, which is Bishop, asks about Rue tnd then the conversation is over. Rue knows something isn’t right, and she’s proved correct when Alamo says that Bishop is outside and he will give her a ride, leaving Maddy and Alamo together. Rue asks where they’re going, and the men say “to another place”. Rue, didn’t anyone teach you about going to a secondary location? Don’t ever do it.

Rue is driven to the desert, where she has to dig a hole big enough for her to stand in. Clearly, things are about to get insane for Rue.

Alamo and Maddy get to talking, and Maddy tells him her business plan. Catching his interest, Alamo says he has a few girls she can work with. Taking her to the strip club, she makes her picks, which includes Kitty and Magick. I’m really interested to see where this goes, because we’re led to believe that Kitty was trafficked into this job, and Maddy is about to get to know Kitty really well.

Back to Rue, the team has her stand in the hole, and she’s making jokes to ease the tension, but she knows she very well could die. Her waiting comes to an end as she sees Alamo riding up to her with a golf club in his hand, assuming he’s going to use her head as the golf ball. That’s where the episode ends, and the audience is left assuming the worst. Is this the end of Rue? Does Alamo and his crew know that she’s working with the feds? I guess we will find out in the next episode.

Hallmark Channel’s May For Moms event rolls on with a film based on a true story about friendship, love, and the age-old game of Mahjong.

MORE FROM NI’S MOVIES TEAM HERE

Melissa Peterman, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe & Fiona Gubelmann In All’s Fair In Love & Mahjong (Credit: Hallmark Media)

All’s Fair In Love & Mahjong has a who’s who of Hallmark stars starring in it, including:

  • Fiona Gubelmann (Christmas Next Door, Tis The Season To Be Irish)
  • Paul Campbell (Three Wise Men And A Baby Franchise, Christmas By Starlight)
  • Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe (Signed, Sealed, Delivered Franchise, Christmas At Dollywood)
  • Melissa Peterman (Reba, Happy’s Place, Haul Out The Holly Franchise)
  • Tamera Mowry-Housley (Sister, Sister, Haunted Harmonies Mystery Franchise)

The film’s official description reads:

“Ronni (Gubelmann) is a beloved school nurse and devoted mom, who hosts a longstanding mahjong game with her dear friends, Shelley (Lowe), Carly (Mowry-Housley), and Melissa (Peterman). When Ronni becomes an empty nester, her whole world tilts — her daughter leaves for college, her hours are cut, and her ex insists it’s time to sell the home she’s poured her heart into. But a chance moment at a school fundraiser reveals her unexpected gift for teaching mahjong — and sparks a connection with Ben (Campbell), a charming contractor whose family needs a little healing of its own. As Ronni brings community after community together through the game she loves, she discovers that sometimes the hand you are dealt changes everything. With her future in the balance, Ronni must learn to bet on herself… and maybe on love, too.”

This film is incredible. Fiona, Paul, Yan-Kay, Melissa, and Tamera all stand out in this beautiful film. I love that you get to see what Ronni is going through, while also teaching everyone her love of Mahjong. This film also shows how a simple game connects an entire community.

I love that you also get to see Ronni and Ben’s relationship grow as the film progresses. It’s really cool to see them connect over Mahjong and her house needing to be repaired. One other fun thing is seeing Ronni teaching everyone in the community how to play the game, and I love that so much.

Hallmark Channel’s All’s Fair In Love & Mahjong is a film that everyone needs to check out. It is a fun, wholesome film to watch with your entire family or even your friends.

DARTH MAUL: Is He Star Wars’ Most Complex Character?

When Darth Maul hit the big screen in 1999 and unveiled his double-bladed lightsaber for the very first time, it changed 9-year-old me’s life forever. He was a character who said nothing and had an electric fighting style, whom we watched Obi-Wan cut in half, and that was that. Until it wasn’t, and we saw him revived with spider-like robotic legs, eventually morphing into regular robotic legs. He appeared in The Clone Wars, we saw him appear in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and even his story’s ultimate ending in Star Wars Rebels. Spanning decades, it’s time for me to say that Darth Maul may just be the perfect and complex character of all time.

Darth Maul’s History

He is a character built on rage and hatred. Maul survived his encounter with Kenobi out of rage and spite with the sole purpose of taking. him down all the while getting revenge on his former master, who cast him aside as well. When we meet him in Clone Wars, he turns his brother Savage to the dark side and trains him into an unstoppable force of nature. He set his sights on the planet Mandalore and set out to rule it, utilizing a manufactured crisis and the criminal underworld. Maul’s plan was genius as he brought all of the crime syndicates together against the Duchess Satine, who was the love of Obi-Wan’s life, all at the same time.

This was a two-for-one as Maul made her look weak while he and the Death Watch swooped in. Unfortunately, Pre Vizsla betrayed Maul once he overthrew the Duchess, thus imprisoning both Maul and Savage. Maul’s imprisonment was short-lived as he challenged Pre and beheaded him, thus taking ownership of the Dark Saber and ultimately Mandalore. Maul had his revenge against Kenobi as he killed Satine in front of him to inflict maximum pain upon the Jedi. It is perhaps one of the most emotional moments in Star Wars and shows just how brutal a villain Darth Maul can be.

However, Palpatine learned of Maul’s rule over Mandalore and arrived as Darth Sidious, killing Savage and defeating Maul in battle and dismantling his organization.

What makes Maul so great, though?

So, Maul is a Sith Lord and uses any means necessary to get what he wants for himself, so what makes him so great? While he may be a villain, I cannot help but point out that he makes some really great points. He realizes what Sidious’s true plan was before anyone else was able to do so, and even offered to join forces with Ahsoka to bring the reign to a short-lived end. He recognizes how disconnected the Jedi Order has become and how easily they were corrupted. Maul is wise enough to highlight how power corrupts, no matter if you are a Jedi, a Sith, or a crime lord. He’s a character who sees how broken the system is and how the endless cycle of violence will continue on and on.

Maul understands how consumed by rage he is; he is trapped inside that prison of rage and violence with no way to escape. These become his downfalls as he craves control and power and gives in to his anger repeatedly. He is a character who has bested Jedi Masters, stood toe to toe against Darth Vader and Darth Sidious, and is one of the most skilled swordsmen with a lightsaber the galaxy has ever seen. His self-awareness and abilities make it so we cannot help but fall in love with him and even see his reasoning in agreement more often than not. Darth Maul is the ultimate character in Star Wars and perhaps the most complex and well written ones at that. Even in his final moments on Tattooine as Obi-Wan held him dying in his arms, Maul understood his revenge quest was his downfall, and there was a truly beautiful moment between the two foes in these final moments.

I could follow Darth Maul forever as he is one of the best-written characters in the entire franchise and truly one of, if not the most compelling, at that. If you have not done so yet, give Maul: Shadow Lord a watch out now on Disney+ and read the comic series of the same name, written by Benjamin Percy, also available in stores now.

How do you feel about the Sith Lord? Be sure to let us know your thoughts below, and check out more by Matt!

“Mortal Kombat 2” Review – All Gas, No Brakes

Are you like me, who’ve been playing “Mortal Kombat” games for twenty years or more? Well, let me be, hopefully, one of the first to tell you that this movie was made with us in mind. From the fight scenes to the settings and music, “Mortal Kombat 2” will whet the appetites of fans aplenty.

Following 2021’s “Mortal Kombat”, we meet the legendary Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) and the Princess of Edenia, Kitana (Adeline Rudolph). Mixing in elements from several of the games, both old and new, this movie takes viewers on a wild ride following our two main characters and their stories. Strap yourselves in as we go through this review!

Source: “Mortal Kombat 2” from Warner Bros. Discovery

Direction & Story

I feel like it’s safe to say that this movie gave fans everything we wanted to see from the first movie. While “Mortal Kombat” had a heavier focus on story and character development, “Mortal Kombat 2” focuses more on game lore while including the tournament itself. With the tournament comes fight after bloody fight, blending the story in so that viewers feel the emotions in every punch. However, this comes with the sacrifice of smaller, more focused character moments that I feel really could’ve elevated the story further.

Directed by Simon McQuoid (2021’s “Mortal Kombat”) and written by Jeremy Slater (“The Umbrella Academy”, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”) with direct input from franchise co-creator Ed Boon, this sequel comes as a far step above the first in terms of action and being closer to the games. However, like I previously said, that comes with some drawbacks. There come a few moments for certain characters, namely Johnny and Kitana, where things slow down, and we focus on their lives. That being said, we aren’t allowed to breathe in those moments as McQuoid quickly moves us on to the next action sequence.

Any longtime fan of Mortal Kombat knows that while the action gameplay is the main focus, the characters are a large part of the love for this franchise. Without much character development, general audiences are left without reason to care for these characters when they inevitably bite the dust or win. This makes me a tad fearful for the third movie, as they’ve already hinted that they feel they found their groove.

Karl Urban as Johnny Cage in Warner Bros Discovery’s “Mortal Kombat 2”

Composition & Score

With longtime cinematographer Stephen F. Windon (“Fast & Furious” franchise, “Star Trek: Beyond”) onboard, you know this movie has a lot of style and visual flair to it. With his eye for visuals and McQuoid’s directing, this movie truly felt like watching the games come to life. In some instances, there were even references like the 2D plane of the fighting screen, which was amazing to see. Not only that, but the variety of color amongst the darkness (both literal AND metaphorical) was a total feast for the eyes. The art directing team obviously lends a lot to that as well, as it shows they worked their butts off here. The visual and special effects were also totally on point, with there really only being one shot that stood out to me as noticeable.

Further heightening the film is a score by composer Benjamin Wallfisch (“IT: Welcome to Derry”, “Predator: Badlands”). The music really lent a lot to this film, keeping the action tense and emotions high. It almost felt like a character in its own right, the presence being felt in every scene but never standing out negatively. It really worked to help tell the story. Personally, I could easily listen to the soundtrack on repeat.

Final Thoughts – 8/10

While the important character moments are small and feel relegated to the sidelines, the rest of the story is told through the epic fights, stellar visuals, and perfect score. This feels almost exactly like what fans wanted from the original and is a near flawless victory.

Dragonlance: War Wizard Announced By Random House Worlds

Random House Worlds have announced a new Dragonlance novel.

MORE FROM NI’S BOOK CLUB HERE

Dragonlance: War Wizard Cover (Credit: Random House Worlds)

Legendary Fantasy Authors Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman are back with a new Dragonlance novel. This time around, they are diving back in time to show how one of the oldest origin stories from the Dragonlance world came about.

The novel follows Huma Dragonbane and Magius and how their unlikely friendship began during the Third Dragon War. Now it is the first of a new 3-book Dragonlance Trilogy, so the other 2 books will also follow them as well. The novel’s full description reads:

“Vinus Solamnus wrote: The practice of magic is secretive, inherently deceitful, and dishonorable. Those who practice magic are forbidden to enter the knighthood, nor should they be connected to the knighthood in any way.

The boy with a rare gift for magic was born in Solamnia, a nation that despised and distrusted mages. His father tried to beat the magic out of him. The knights threatened him with imprisonment and exile. He endured tragedy and heartbreak. Yet he persisted with his magic, for the sake of the magic.

One friend stood by him when others persecuted him, a young man who was studying for the knighthood. No one could understand this unlikely friendship.

The knight was Huma. The boy took the name, Magius. The two would one day become famous in Solamnic history, fighting together to defeat the Queen of Darkness.

But that future is distant, far down the River of Time.

For now, this is the story of an unlikely friendship that would one day change the world.”

Dragonlance: War Wizard releases August 4th.

Marvel Comics Announce New Details For The Mortal Thor #800

Marvel Comics have revealed new details for Thor #800.

MORE FROM NI’S COMICS BULLPEN HERE

The Mortal Thor #800 Cover A By Alex Ross (Credit: Marvel Comics)

Writer Al Ewing and Artist Pasqual Ferry are celebrating 800 issues this August. Now the 2 of them left off the comic with:

“The God of Thunder met his fate and died as a sacrifice to power a spell by his sibling Loki. This spell saw Thor forgotten by those who knew him and the rest of the Asgardians seemingly forever severed from the realm of Midgard. But the story continued in MORTAL THOR, as a new hero rose on the streets of New York City, a hero with no powers, just a determination to right wrongs—with a hammer. Seeking a normal life but forced to step into the fray, Sigurd Jarlson found himself beset by threats from Thor’s past including the vicious Donald Blake, aka The Serpent, and Mr. Hyde. Sigurd’s encounters with these villains have led him closer to uncovering the mystery tying him to the missing Asgardian God of Thunder, with a pivotal moment set to take place in August’s issue of MORTAL THOR.”

Also included with the landmark issues, are stories from writer Chris Condon & artist Jesse Lonergan, and a story from Kieron Gillen. The book’s description reads:

“AN ASGARDIAN MILESTONE: THOR #800!

The Serpent has trapped Sigurd Jarlson in the worst of all possible worlds for his greatest trial. Now, without even a weapon in his hand, he must prove himself worthy to enter the Realms of the Gods. Somewhere in the city, a man without even a hammer begins the ultimate quest…the quest for Thor!”

Al Ewing also mentioned that:

“Issue #800 wraps up some long-running plotlines that have plagued Thor since before his death, but it also sets Sigurd Jarlson on a quest that will send him through the realms of myth to an Asgard that’s never needed a Thor more than now. Sigurd is still without any powers beyond his own courage, wits, and willpower — can a mortal face the trials of the gods, save ten worlds, and bring the Thunder God back to the people who need him? I couldn’t ask for a better artist than Pasqual Ferry to help tell this story, and I hope you all enjoy the ride we’ve got planned for you. #800 is only the beginning!”

The Mortal Thor #800 releases August 19th.
