Did You Know? G.I. Joe: Doll or Action Figure?

G.I. Joe is a popular franchise that has been around for decades, capturing the hearts of both children and adults alike. It’s a franchise that has been adapted into various forms of media, from comic books to movies, and has a dedicated fan base. However, even the most dedicated fans may not know some of the lesser-known facts about the franchise.

Creation Process

G.I. Joe was created in the early 1960s by a team of designers at Hasbro led by Don Levine. The initial concept for the toy was inspired by the success of Barbie, a popular doll aimed at young girls. Levine believed that boys would also enjoy playing with a doll-like action figure, and set out to create a line of toys that would appeal to them.

The first G.I. Joe figures were released in 1964, and were designed to represent soldiers from different branches of the US military. The figures were highly detailed, with realistic uniforms and equipment, and were marketed as “America’s Movable Fighting Man”. The toys were an immediate success, and soon became one of the most popular toy lines in the world.

Evolution

Over the years, the GI Joe line has evolved to include a wide variety of characters, vehicles, and playsets. In the 1980s, Hasbro introduced a new line of GI Joe figures that were smaller, standing at 3.75 inches tall. This new line of figures was marketed as “A Real American Hero” and was accompanied by a cartoon series and comic book.

The popularity of the G.I. Joe line continued to grow throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with new figures and accessories being released on a regular basis. In the early 2000s, Hasbro introduced a new line of G.I. Joe figures that were larger than the 3.75-inch figures but smaller than the original 12-inch figures. These figures were marketed as “GI Joe vs. Cobra” and were accompanied by a new cartoon series and comic book.

Impact and Influence

G.I. Joe In Pop Culture

G.I. Joe has had a significant impact on pop culture since its inception in 1964. The franchise has been featured in various forms of media, including comics, television shows, and movies. The characters and storylines have become iconic, and many people who grew up with the franchise have fond memories of playing with the toys or watching the cartoon.

One of the most significant impacts that G.I. Joe has had on pop culture is its influence on the action figure industry. The franchise was one of the first to introduce action figures that were highly articulated and had a wide range of accessories. This innovation set a new standard for the toy industry and led to the creation of other successful franchises such as Star Wars and Transformers.

In Toy Industry

G.I. Joe’s influence on the toy industry can be seen in the way that action figures are designed and marketed today. The franchise was one of the first to focus on creating a wide range of characters with unique personalities and backstories. This approach helped to create a sense of attachment and loyalty among fans, which in turn led to increased sales.

Another way that G.I. Joe has influenced the toy industry is through its use of marketing and advertising. The franchise was one of the first to use television commercials and other forms of advertising to promote its products. This approach helped to create a sense of excitement and anticipation among fans, which in turn led to increased sales.

Overall, G.I. Joe has had a significant impact on pop culture and the toy industry. Its innovative approach to action figures and marketing helped to set a new standard for the industry and influenced the creation of other successful franchises.

GI Joe Little Known Facts

Fans of G.I. Joe are always searching for rare figures to add to their collection. Some of the rarest figures include the 1982 Straight Arm Cobra Commander, the 1983 Doc, and the 1984 Firefly. These figures were only available through mail-in offers, making them highly sought after by collectors. Other rare figures include the 1995 Sgt. Savage and his Screaming Eagles line, which was only available in Europe, and the 1997 Convention Exclusive Cobra Commander, which was limited to only 500 pieces.

Hasbro would have to find a way to copyright their product because the basic human form could not be exclusive. Hasbro would add a small scar under the right cheek of their figures to make them slightly unique enough to copyright.

The marketing team new that trying to sell a doll to boys would be impossible at the time. They would come up with the term action figure and trademark the phrase “Americas Movable Fighting Man!”

G.I. Joe was seeing huge success until the American intervention in Vietnam. The unpopularity of the war saw G.I. Joe fall out of favor and Hasbro would have to pivot and evolve. Joe’s would shift from a military background to that of a wilderness survival and adventure team.

Who Was Cyborg’s First Villain In The Comics?

0

Victor Stone, also known as Cyborg, was a normal kid until a laboratory accident forced his father to convert him into a superhero. As a founding member of the new Teen Titans, Cyborg has faced many enemies over the years, but who was his first villain?

Although some may argue that his first solo villain was Twoface, a Batman villain, Cyborg’s first real villain was actually his childhood best friend, Ronald Evers. In Tales of the New Team Titans #1 in 1982, Ronald takes it upon himself to investigate the accident that changed his friend. After learning that Cyborg’s tech was being used for military purposes by Star Labs, Ronald attempts to blow up the building. Cyborg shows up to stop him, and during the fight, Ronald falls from the roof. He is later saved by the very company he tried to destroy, leading to countless fights between him and Cyborg over the years.

Key Takeaways

  • Victor Stone’s transformation into Cyborg was the result of a laboratory accident.
  • Cyborg’s first villain was his childhood best friend, Ronald Evers, who attempted to blow up Star Labs.
  • The conflict between Cyborg and Ronald Evers continued for years.

The Aftermath and Continuous Fights

After the incident with Ronald Evers, Cyborg found himself in a constant battle with his former best friend. Evers, who had become the property of Star Labs, was often used as a pawn against Cyborg in various battles.

Despite their history, Cyborg never hesitated to fight against Evers, knowing that he was a threat to innocent lives. The two engaged in countless fights over the years, with Evers always trying to take down Cyborg and his team.

Their battles were intense and often resulted in destruction of property and injuries to both parties. However, Cyborg never gave up on trying to reason with his former friend, hoping to one day bring him back to the side of good.

As time went on, Cyborg’s list of enemies grew, but his fights with Evers remained a constant reminder of the consequences of his transformation into a cyborg. The aftermath of the accident that turned him into a hero had left him with a lifelong battle against those who sought to use his technology for evil.

Star Wars Hyperspace Stories #9 Who’s the Vos? Review

Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories #9 by Michael Moreci, Nick Brokenshire, David Kennedy, and Tom Fowler. (Credit Dark Horse Comics)

DARK HORSE COMICS

Creative Team:

Writer: Michael Moreci

Artist: Nick Brokenshire and David Kennedy

Letters: Tyler Smith and Jimmy Betancourt

Cover by: Tom Fowler and Bill Crabtree

Variant Cover by: Cary Nord

The Rundown:

We open with a gentleman having a drink at a bar who is then approached by bounty hunters who have come to collect. That is until the lights go out and a mysterious green lightsaber ignites to break up the party. Graygon Eckt is a wanted man for stealing treasure and secrets from Count Dooku and running off and as a result has a stiff bounty upon his head. Quinlan Vos rescues him and we spend this story with him squaring off against the baddest hunter in the galaxy Cad Bane!

The Art:

Nick and David tag team this issue splendidly as we get flashes of blasters meeting the green lightsaber in a classic epic dual. The excitement takes our imaginations to a galaxy far far away as the beloved fan favorite Cad Bane hits the page leading to a fantastic one-shot of him and Vos fighting on the streets. The issue is visually stunning leading to excitement and adventure on every page.

The Writing:

Moreci captures the essence and intimidation of Bane as you can hear and feel the words he is speaking every time he hits the page. One thing that stands out is the confidence and arrogance of Quinlan Vos who fans may be familiar with. The story features epic battles with that Star Wars light-heartedness we come to expect of the franchise.

Wrap-up:

This is a visually stunning masterpiece as we get to witness Jedi vs. one of the most feared Bounty Hunters in all of the Star Wars lore. Familiar names appear leading us to have our “pop” moments while introducing fun and goofy cannon fodder for the Jedi to destroy. All in all a very fun read.

Welcome to another New Comic Book Day review from the N.I. Bullpen!

It’s the final part to the very first Star Trek comic book event, Day Of Blood. Encompassing multiple Star Trek comic series, this event has proven that it was indeed worth the wait for the first Star Trek comic event.

When we last left off, Worf was holding the mortally wounded body of his son Alexander and Sisko was being attacked by a Klingon ship’s weapon powered by a Bajoran Orb.

At the same time a two ship team of the Theseus and Defiant led by Spock and B’Elanna Torres respectively have been battling a group of Blood Wing ships loyal to Kahless II.

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD**

Risk Is Our Business

Spock contacts the Defiant, and informs them of what Sisko is going through down on the surface of the Klingon homeworld. Sisko is moments away from being destroyed.

In order to counteract the Orb Weapon attacking Sisko, Spock suggests they create their own Orb weapon using the Bajoran Orb of Creation. There are numerous risks involved with this plan.

Essentially they have to create a super weapon out of an object that they essentially know nothing about in less than an hour. On top of that, the weapon needs to work perfectly the very first time.

When an Ensign points this out to Spock he simply replies as Capt. Kirk would have by saying “Risk is our business.”

Sisko Rallies

We return to Sisko. Kahless raises his weapon to deliver the final blow. Sisko prays to the Prophets.

He is granted a vision of what is going on in the ships above. He sees the two crews readying their Orb Weapon. Each person playing their roles and doing so with extreme precision and focus. The weapon fires.

Sisko is given a new found strength as the Orb Weapon is fired, counteracting the other Orb Weapon being used against Sisko. Sisko reaches out and grabs Kahless’s weapon, preventing the death blow.

As Kahless is being driven back, a plant reaches out and touches Alexander, bringing him back to consciousness, and Worf explains why Alexander did not see the gates of Sto’Vo’Kor when he was near death. Kahless flees the battle.

The High Counselor Wakes

The High Counselor of the Klingon Empire is awoken on board one of the Starfleet vessels after being saved in a previous issue. He is informed of the situation and he vows to hunt down Kahless once he is recovered.

Soon after he tries to sleep and recover, a familiar Romulan foe appears. Sela appears, drugs the High Counselor and says he will have the chance to rebuild Qo’nos, if he tells her everything she wants to know.

The End?

The battle is won and the Starfleet crews are celebrating. Spock and Data talk about family issues and Sisko checks in with Worf about Alexander’s condition.

Elsewhere, some of Kahless’s men that are still loyal are lamenting about what to do now that their leader has fled. Just then, they receive a transmission on the Emperor’s secure channel. They attempt to block the incoming message thinking it’s a trick, but they can not.

The person sending the message has bypassed their lockouts with ease and is claiming to be their true path back to honor and power. Who was the mystery messenger? It’s none other that Data’s brother, Lore.

Story Review

Kelly and Lanzing continue the classic Star Trek stoey telling in top form in this issue. They give the first ever Star Trek comic book event an ending that’s both satisfying and leaves room for even more epic events to take place.

The event has been full of drama, epic action and classic sci-fi tech babble like only Star Trek can pull off.

How does Lore fit into all of this? What does Sela have planned this time? How will Starfleet deal with these new events? We’ll have to see what happens once the dust settles from Day Of Blood.

Artwork Overview

Unzueta and Louise continue with the beautiful artwork that brings the Star Trek universe to life. Bright colors and vivid backgrounds set the scene and keep your attention during every panel.

The shadows in the scene where Sela appears are used wonderfully to set up a foreboding tone for future issues. From the color usage to the character designs, this series is stunning.

Overall Score: 9 OUT OF 10 – “Must Pull”

The first Star Trek comic book event comes to an epic and satisfying conclusion in this issue. While it leaves cliffhangers for future stories, the event itself is essentially wrapped up in a nice little bow. Though future events will no doubt be impacted by these events of this run.

Between the storytelling and the artwork this is a masterpiece of comic book media. Now, Star Trek fans can officially say they have a comic book event like the heroes of Marvel or DC.

Make sure you pick up Star Trek #12 from IDW Publishing at your local comic book shop this week for new comic book day!

As always everyone Be Safe, Be Kind, and Take It Easy!

Issue 9 jumps right into more of what readers have been looking for as we start to see some events of Pyre’s past! This complicated character is someone that has been intriguing to figure out ever since he was introduced back in issue 7. Let’s see how far down the rabbit hole this takes us!

Check out The Dead Lucky #8 Review

The Story:

This issue opens with a flashback sequence where we see what happened to Pyre right after the accident that both him and Bibi were involved in. We then cut back to San Francisco where we find out that Bibi has been missing for 3 days and Morrow is trying to mitigate the negative implications of Bibi’s perceived failed mission. Complexity continues to ensue once Bibi returns from Jordan and Pyre secretly follows!

The Writing:

Melissa Flores continues to craft an emotionally charged, multi layered story that keeps the readers guessing. Each month we haven gotten another layer of the onion peeled back only to reveal multiple possibilities of where the story can go! The flow is well paced and easy to follow even though there are multiple story lines being told at the same time.

The Art, Colors and Layouts:

French Carlomagno’s art and Mattie Iacono’s are some of the best in the business. The change in art style and color palette make the flashback scenes very easy to recognize and follow, which adds a beautiful transition from the main story line. Some of my favorite moments are when Pyre and Bibi use their powers or transform in or out of their costumes. The art and colors have the reader feeling the electricity in the air and you can’t help but hear a sound effect as you read over those panels. French and Mattie continue to drive home the emotional conflict between Bibi and Pyre in every scene they are drawn in.

While reading, I found myself as conflicted as Bibi about Pyre. We still don’t know if we can fully trust him yet. This internal conflict is a testament to the astonishing work this entire creative team is delivering month over month.

Final Thoughts:

This incredible creative team continues to produce some of the most consistent and compelling content in the MassiveVerse. This heartfelt, multi-layered story is a must read for all comic book fans! This book has been on my pull list since day 1 and is one I look forward to each month!

Overall Rating 8.75 out of 10

After the devastating death of Grace at the hands of the corrupted Green Ranger. all of our heroes are now strung about the cosmos Billy on the other hand is talking…. with Grace?

Billy Comes to in a small pocket dimension of the Morphin Grid talking to a “program” of Grace’s digital copy of her brain. Flabergasted he tries to wrap his head around the concept. But Grace being the consummate general pulls him together and gives him a story about the Morphinaut and his dimension and how Dark Spector is now infecting the grid and the rangers are going to be helpless.

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #112 by Melissa Flores, Hendry Prasetya, Matt Herms and Ed Dukeshire (Credit: Boom! Studios – Cover: Björn Barends)

Billy once again with the typical self-doubt says he’s not the Red Ranger or the White Ranger. Grace stops him outright reminding him he is the Blue Ranger “The Problem Solver”

Where is Somewhere?

The rest of the team has been displaced by the Master Arch, where… we don’t know! In pairs there are Zach and Trini, Kim and Tommy, and finally Aisha with Matt. Who’s tied up at the moment? They keep getting attacked by wave after wave of Thrulls. In a moment of downtime, you still get to see the conflict between the teens as they are still dealing with the remnants of some seriously hurt feelings.

With the neverending onslaught of baddies. Aisha and Tommy have a chat with Matt asking for him to put aside his waking nightmares and ranger up because they need him. When the tides are turning towards the thrulls a ship appears and on said ship we see Billy materiazle out of the grid finding a chest…. with eggs.

Thoughts From THE GRID

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #112 by Melissa Flores, Hendry Prasetya, Matt Herms and Ed Dukeshire (Credit: Boom! Studios – Cover: Goni Montes)

These pages went but at whiplash speed for me. It was a nice departure that this book had nothing to do with the villains. Even the moment with just Trini, Kim, Tommy, and Zach was a nice nod to the original team. The dynamic Between Matt and Aisha is interesting so that’s something to look out for in fact it’s featured on one of the variant covers!

Seeing the grid from that unique perspective was amazing! Having all the colors flow through gives me a Power Rangers Universe vibe and to top it off talking about the Morphinaut too! But saying that he was from another Dimension could have more long-term story consequences.

So yeah the eggs, that was an old nod to an episode that was never finished so once again Missy is playing in the MMPR toy box and has found a deep cut, hope it doesn’t “crack under pressure”

For context, the “Power Eggs” In both Power Rangers and Zyuranger were kind of a throw away once-off idea. How they will play out now? It’s giving me very Shelby/Ms. Morgan Dino Charge vibes. I’ll go out on a limb and say new zords?

Fire Power issue #27-  Skybound Entertainment

It was recently announced by Skybound entertainment that Firepower would be ending its run with issue 30 with a supersized 56 page extravaganza landing in shops on December 27! I have mixed emotions about this series coming to a close. However, I am happy for the fact that the dynamic duo of Kirkman and Samnee have the opportunity to tell a complete story! Now onto issue 27!

Check out Fire Power Review issue 26 here!

Summary:

We ended issue 26 on an extremely high note in which Kelly was able to conjure the firepower She now joins the rest of the Wilson family in the war against the great serpent and Master Shaw. We open this issue where Owen has to confirm that Kelly’s ability was not a fluke. Her and Owen exchange blows in an emotionally charged fiery showdown! This is just the start of the character development that happens throughout this issue.

The Writing:

Robert Kirkman continues to showcase his abilities to create a narrative that makes readers care and root for all of the characters in this series. You can’t help but smile and chuckle at times during the interactions between Owen, Kelly, and the kids. Especially now that Kelly is able to train with and teach her children instead of sitting on the sidelines. The dialogue in the opening scenes with Kelly and Owen was an incredible experience that gave the story a cinematic feel. Kirkman hammers home the looming threat and provides context to how the firepower works, which has been something top of mind for most readers.

Check out Fire Power issue 25 here!

Fire Power #27 Robert Kirkman (co-creator/writer), Chris Samnee (co-creator/artist), Matthew Wilson (colorist) and Rus Wooton (letters) Credit: Skybound Entertainment

The Art, Colors and Layouts:

The combination of Chris Samnee’s art and Matt Wilson’s colors really shine during the action sequences by not only allowing the reader to feel the motion but also to convey the tone of the scene. When you add in Rus Wootons onomatopoeia along with the unique panel layouts it creates a fully immersive experience.

Final Thoughts:

The character development and pieces that have been set up I have a feeling are going to pay dividends down the final stretch of this series! There even was some potential foreshadowing for certain characters that I am excited to see how it all plays out!

Overall Grade 8.75 out of 10

The Schlub #2 Review

The Schlub #2 by Kenny Porter, Ryan Stegman, Tyrell Cannon, Mike Spicer, and John J. Hill. (Credit Image Comics cover by Tyrell Cannon and Mike Spicer)

Creative Team

Writers: Kenny Porter and Ryan Stegman

Artist: Tyrell Cannon

Colors: Mike Spicer

Letters: John J. Hill

The Rundown:

Cirrus is having trouble adjusting to his not-so-super body anymore while Roger is out for revenge beginning with his brother when he overhears a conversation between Sarah and his brother who still both hold out hope he can overcome his bitterness. Meanwhile, it is discovered that in order to switch bodies again there is a massive amount of life energy required which is where we see our ominous foe Wyrm ready to do what is needed against Maxterra. The soul cradle and the fate of the galaxy now rest in Roger and a not-so-in-shape Cirrus as they have four days to do so.

The Art:

One thing to appreciate about this story is the amount of detail that goes into every page. From tiny shards of glass to hidden easter eggs you can be sure of one thing and that is Tyrell Cannon laying down some of the absolute best artwork in the business right now with this run. The chemistry he and Spicer have to compliment the colors and the drawing phenomenally as this book is visually stunning at every turn.

The Schlub #2 by Kenny Porter, Ryan Stegman, Tyrell Cannon, Mike Spicer, and John J. Hill. (Credit Image Comics cover by Tyrell Cannon and Mike Spicer)

The Writing:

Normal guy turned hero we have heard that one before right? Well, not exactly as Porter and Stegman do a wonderful job of adding depth to both Roger and Cirrus. In issue 1 we were left to think Roger would be out for revenge but, they do a great job adding layers and depth to his flawed character. He is a bumbling idiot who is trying to right himself and the chemistry he and Cirrus have mesh together like Batman and Alfred..if Alfred were a divorced dentist who thought the world was out to get him. The story is a mix of action and heart that captivates the audience throughout.

Wrap-up:

The Schlub is a homerun from Image Comics and this creative team. It’s a funny take full of action, adventure, and as-of-yet unexplored mythos. Comic fans should be ensuring this makes their monthly pull list.

VOID RIVALS #4 by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Matheus Lopes and Rus Wooton (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

Void Rivals #4 starts right up where we left off with the Zertonian, Solila is heading to her home world to deliver the Agorrian to the Premire who leads the Zertonians. There is a ton story wise that goes on in this issue so to prevent any spoilers all I will say is this: You NEED to check this out!

Check out the review on Void Rivals #3 here!

The Writing, Art and Colors:

Kirkman continues to craft this unique universe that keeps you on your toes! The visual world building done by Lorenzo De Felici and Matheus Lopes is mind blowing! The attention to detail with the ships, architecture and other characters is truly impressive. One of my favorite scenes is when the Premire is on his throne. It reminded me a lot of the Oblivion Song (written by Kirkman and drawn by De Felici) when Lord Halaak, leader of the faceless men, was sitting in a similar way on his throne.

Final Thoughts:

As a new reader to the Energon Universe I am absolutely hooked on what this creative team is producing. The story is very new reader friendly and the artwork is captivating! I am looking forward to next month’s issue and to the first new storyline in Transformers #1!
