Issue 9 jumps right into more of what readers have been looking for as we start to see some events of Pyre’s past! This complicated character is someone that has been intriguing to figure out ever since he was introduced back in issue 7. Let’s see how far down the rabbit hole this takes us!

The Story:

This issue opens with a flashback sequence where we see what happened to Pyre right after the accident that both him and Bibi were involved in. We then cut back to San Francisco where we find out that Bibi has been missing for 3 days and Morrow is trying to mitigate the negative implications of Bibi’s perceived failed mission. Complexity continues to ensue once Bibi returns from Jordan and Pyre secretly follows!

The Writing:

Melissa Flores continues to craft an emotionally charged, multi layered story that keeps the readers guessing. Each month we haven gotten another layer of the onion peeled back only to reveal multiple possibilities of where the story can go! The flow is well paced and easy to follow even though there are multiple story lines being told at the same time.

The Art, Colors and Layouts:

French Carlomagno’s art and Mattie Iacono’s are some of the best in the business. The change in art style and color palette make the flashback scenes very easy to recognize and follow, which adds a beautiful transition from the main story line. Some of my favorite moments are when Pyre and Bibi use their powers or transform in or out of their costumes. The art and colors have the reader feeling the electricity in the air and you can’t help but hear a sound effect as you read over those panels. French and Mattie continue to drive home the emotional conflict between Bibi and Pyre in every scene they are drawn in.

While reading, I found myself as conflicted as Bibi about Pyre. We still don’t know if we can fully trust him yet. This internal conflict is a testament to the astonishing work this entire creative team is delivering month over month.

Final Thoughts:

This incredible creative team continues to produce some of the most consistent and compelling content in the MassiveVerse. This heartfelt, multi-layered story is a must read for all comic book fans! This book has been on my pull list since day 1 and is one I look forward to each month!

Overall Rating 8.75 out of 10
