”Sicko #3” Review – Coming to Light

The Run Down

At the end of the previous issue, Valentine was officially captured and had her immune system taken from her. Unwillingly, she was placed in a Xavier’s School-like hospital environment. There are others like her, but how can this be? Well, my lovelies, that just might be coming to light. So come with me as we explore this new environment in Tini Howard’s “Sicko 3”!

The Writing

Just coming out of the issue, I feel it’s safe to say that this excited me more than any other. Howard’s made it extremely hard for me to review this without outright spoiling anything. Within just a single issue, so much is either answered or built upon, and it’s simply astounding! Howard is expertly building the tension with every turn of the page, flipping the script on what we’re used to.

The revelations made here don’t disappoint, but they certainly make me wonder what’s coming. I mean that in the absolute best and most excited way possible. At every turn, the pacing ebbs and flows as necessary while helping us get used to these new characters. Whenever I think or worry she’ll stop, Howard continues finding ways to keep this as my favorite run of the year.

The Art

As with the previous issues, Amilcar Pinna and Amanda Grazini are absolutely rocking it in the art department. In this issue in particular, I love the very unique angles that Pinna chooses. Each one feels disorienting on purpose, putting us in the mind of Valentine in more ways than one. The angles not only show us that reality can be played with, but that the way she views it is warping and changing.

When it comes to the colors from Grazini, they’re absolutely gorgeous. Things such as sunsets are not only beautifully lit, but they work hard to set the tone. As things continue getting darker for Valentine, so does the color of her world, and they play together beautifully. As for the lettering, Maher keeps things super easy to follow and understand while perfectly using the boxes to set each scene.

Final Thoughts

I don’t know how she did it, but Howard managed to solidify this as my favorite run of the year with this issue. The revelations and twists made here were simply jaw-dropping and won’t leave any reader disappointed! I seriously can’t wait for the next issue and need it as soon as possible!

Overall Grade: 10/10
