The Story

After the heartbreaking ending of One World Under Doom #8, we see exactly the extent of how tragic the event was. In the gripping fight between the heroes of the world and Doctor Doom, something unbelievable happened. The one single thing that could break the cold heart of the World Emperor, the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom. Valeria Richards was killed. The only thing in the world that Doom loved was gone, by his own hand.

In One World Under Doom #9, we see just how deep the heartbreak goes for Doom and how far he’s willing to go to bring her back. It’s no secret that Valeria holds a place in Doom’s heart that no one in the world holds, and he’s more than willing to prove it. He’s willing to prove that not only does he love Valeria more than anyone else, but more than his own self.

The Writing

Ryan North ended the One World Under Doom event on the most heartbreaking but satisfying note that could possibly have been achieved. With how stimulating and riveting this entire event has been, the ending was hit all the right notes. Every issue of One World Under Doom has been wrapped in action and dripping with magic, but the last issue was full of heart. To see Doom in such a vulnerable place showed how much depth there truly was in this comic run.

There’s no better ending than what Ryan North gave Doom as his time of being Sorcerer Supreme comes to an end.

The Art

R.B. Silva has been extremely consistent in the quality of his work in One World Under Doom, and that continues with the final issue. Silva provides so much emotion to every page, from Doom forbidding Valeria from dying to Reed and Sue seeing their daughter die. Bringing that kind of emotion to life is no easy feat, but Silva accomplished it easily.

Alongside Silva is David Curiel and Travis Lanham, who handles the colors and the lettering. Curiel was able to make match the tone of the story with the beautiful colors perfectly, with the signature green of Doctor Doom being very present. Travis Lanham captures the emotions of the story and gives the words the power they need. Together, they have done some pretty incredible things in this comic run with their talents.

Final Thoughts

One World Under Doom #9 ends on a perfect and heartbreaking note. The creative team came into this run all gas and no breaks, and they didn’t stop until the run was finished.
