The Story:

The Last Day of H.P. Lovecraft portrays the final journey of a complex and tortured man. Adapted from the French graphic novel, this issue sees Lovecraft on his death bed being visited by a strange man that he does not recognize. This man wants to show Lovecraft something, something the author is not ready to see.

The Writing:

The writing in this issue was a real hang up for me. While the story being told seems like it could be an interesting tale, the slow and plodding nature of the issue made it an uninteresting read. Much of the dialogue was drawn out and cryptic to the point that I found myself more confused and frustrated than excited to read on. While I believe there is potential here for something in the future, but as for this issue it just didn’t hook me like it should.

The Art:

The incredible artwork by Jakub Rebelka saved this issue for me. While the story didn’t grip me early on, the art did from page one. Each page was packed with a sense of uncomfortable dread. The art style echoed the feeling I get when reading one of Lovecraft’s stories.

Overall Grade: 6.5/10

Solid artwork couldn’t save this issue from the slow pace and confusing writing. While I understand that this is an English adaptation of a French story, the adaptation still has to be enjoyable. I just couldn’t get on board with this issue. I hope that the writing catches up to the artwork in the next issue.
