Quick Stops Vol. 3 #2 – Let’s Go to the Mall!

Published:

Volume 1 of Quick Stops brought us a 4 story anthology of our favorite Kevin Smith characters. Then Volume 2 gave us a dark, twisted, and sex filled origin story of everyone’s favorite golden cow, Mooby. Now the View Askewniverse continues in Quick Stops Volume 3. Issue 1 gave us the comic Holden made for Alyssa in Chasing Amy. Now Issue 2 takes us back to a couple of characters we met at a mall in the ’90s.

The Story for Quick Stops Vol. 3 #2

We kick off in a very meta way. A way that allows you be able to hear Kevin Smith’s voice in your head. He explains a bit of what he’s doing, as well as how this comic is a goodbye to the one and only, Shannen Doherty, who passed away last year. We go from real-life stories surrounding Doherty, Smith, and Mallrats to a scene from Mallrats 2 that never was.

Twilight of the Mallrats was to be the sequel to the 1995 film, Mallrats. A film that predicted Ben Affleck’s casting as Batman, and made it so chocolate-covered pretzels can never be looked at the same way again. Doherty starred as Rene, the girlfriend of Brodie. Rene was done with Brodie’s crap. However, at the end they… spoilers…. reconcile. Smith wrote a scene for the two of them in his sequel that never became a movie, but will now forever be a comic book story.

The Art

Any fan of Kevin Smith will immediately recognize and hear the first page of this comic. The art nails the expressions and demeanor of the not so silent real life Silent Bob (played by Smith). As we go from real life reminiscing, to a scene from a sequel that never was, we get a ton of details throughout. Details that remind you what universe you’re in, and make you feel nostalgic. So make sure you stop and check out the details on each page. Snoochie Boochies.

In true old school Kevin Smith style, we get our art in black and white. While we’ve learned since Clerks, that Smith did this as a cost saving choice, I love that it’s become something iconic, that makes me think of Kevin Smith.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10

While Kevin Smith and the Askewniverse are notoriously known for “dick and fart jokes,” this universe also gets you all in your feels. SIDENOTE: Smith really should have warned audiences to bring tissues to Clerks 3 (NOT in that way!).

Quick Stops Vol. 3 Issue 2 nailed the humor and heart element that we know Kevin Smith is all about these days. All while honoring a friend, and someone who was part of this universe in its early days. I’m absolutely loving diving into these side quests through the Quick Stops comics. If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “It’s not a schooner, it’s a sailboat!” you should absolutely pick up this comic! It’s the perfect addition to an amazing movie that I love to rewatch every Easter.
