Catch up with Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1 here!

The Story

Matt – This issue continues to explore the various effects that these new versions of Kryptonite have on Clark. I cannot help but think of why they did not realize Luthor would take notice and have something up his sleeve!

What ensues is a series of calamities and humorous adventures that culminate in some de-aging that even Hollywood would be jealous of!

Megan – With the discovery of the new Kryptonite, it’s no surprise that Superman feels he has to test out each one to know what he’s up against. Accompanying him on these trials is none other than Batman, who is overseeing each test.

In Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1, we saw what affects the purple Kryptonite had on Superman. In the second issue, we get a good look at how the cobalt Kryptonite effects Superman, and to say it’s a big reaction would be an understatement.

The cobalt Kryptonite has an enlarging effect on Superman, with no end in sight. According to Batman, Superman is growing in size about four inches every 25 minutes, which is alarming to say the least. It was only a matter of time before Superman’s gargantuan body made its way through the ceiling of the Fortress of Solitude, but he never considered how the public would react.

His idea is to get ahead of the curve and address the public directly of this great big problem of his. While that seems all well and good, what he doesn’t know is that there’s a plan being formed against him by the hands of Lex Luther, which involves a very dangerous villain, a different color Kryptonite, and a need for chaos that would make even an overgrown Superman shrink.

The Writing

Matt – This issue is an absolute trip. Yet I cannot help but be overtly bothered by the fact this lady chose not to save her important work! I mean, she even sees that two giants are fighting AND SHE DOESN’T HIT SAVE?! Prince sure knows how to leave a lasting impression to a reader.

Jokes aside, there were a lot of fun references to other properties in this book, and Bruce showing how endearing Clark can be emboldens the relationship these two have, and it is something that I love when a writer explores more of. Lex Luthor continues to be a miserable human, and there is even a bit more recklessness to him in this issue as well.

Megan – W. Maxwell Prince continues to impress with Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #2 with perfectly capturing the aura of who Superman is to his core. Superman, being the world’s greatest hero, does not think twice about taking a hit so no one else has to.

This is proven in the overall storyline, as we can see with Superman voluntarily going through these trials, and in this second issue when he takes, what looks to be, the biggest hit of all.

The Art

Matt – Morazzo and O’Halloran continue to put on a flashy display of various coloring and artistic beauty. The subtle hints in Batman’s face that show off his pure joy at using this new device and then seeing Batman buddy cop with Krypto for an issue were standouts for me.

At the same time, Superman has this boyish charm to him that even brings Batman to come around, and it is all captured wonderously!

Megan – Martin Morazzo follows up the first issue of Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum with artwork that proves he continuous talent. Morazzo was able to capture the seriousness of the situation with the citizens of Metropolis being in grave danger, while also capturing the slight lightheartedness of an overgrown Superman. Besides all of that, we got to see more than one great DC powerhouse joining this issue, and each character looked spectacular.

Accompanying Morazzo is Chris O’Halloran, who handles the colors of the comic. O’Halloran matched energies with Morazzo, and brought that Superman vibe we all know and love to the comic with the vibrant colors. I appreciated how O’Halloran was able to make each page pop with his use of vibrancy juxtaposing the muted look of the city of Metropolis. All in all, the artists are knocking it out of the park with bringing this story to life, and I look forward to seeing their talents on display in the next issue.

Overall Grade – 9/10

Megan – 9/10. This is a comic made with the Superman fans in mind. You get everything you want from a Superman comic and more. Seeing the many faces of Superman from the effects of the different Kryptonite has brought much more lore to the story of the world’s greatest superhero we all know and love. MORE FROM MEGAN HERE!
